Cairo, one of 11 ambassadors
to do so.
But only Shamir, who
founded the Israeli Academic
Center in Cairo, and the new
ambassador from Iraq were
asked to stay for separate,
substantive conversations
with the president after the
ceremonies.
Yediot Achronot last week
quoted Mubarak as telling
the Israeli ambassador that
"there is an Arab partner. Ac-
cording to the report, the
Egyptian president num-
bered Iraq among the moder-
ate Arab states.
That echoes recent specula-
tion here and in the West that
Iraq, as part of a generally
more Western orientation,
might be preparing to forsake
its extremism regarding the
Arab-Israeli conflict.
Statements by Tariq Azziz,
the Iraqi foreign minister,
and other diplomats in
Baghdad, tend to bolster the
notion that Iraq was adopting
more moderate rhetoric with
regard to Israel.

Israel Bombs
Sidon, Sinks
Terrorist Raft

Jerusalem (JTA) — An
Israeli gunboat sank a rubber
dinghy last Saturday off the
Lebanese port of Tyre, killing
its three occupants. They
were identified by naval of-
ficers as members of Al
Fatah, the Palestine Libera-
tion Organization's military
wing.
The naval encounter fol-
lowed an Israeli air force at-
tack last Friday on what was
described as an Al Fatah
naval base in the southern
Lebanese port city of Sidon.
According to the naval of-
ficers, the dinghy was on a
course toward Israel when it
was challenged by a Dabour-
class gunboat. This was the
third attempt by terrorists
this year to infiltrate Israel
by sea.
Other boats carrying ter-
rorists have been sunk while
laying mines on routes used
by Israeli naval craft.
