and

practically
discrimination is dying.
Why did I go to Mississippi
on a hazardous mission in
1964? I did not go to be beaten
or to be a martyr or a symbol.
But there were martyrs.
The Christian leadership of
the National Council of Chur-
ches spoke of the way of the
cross. We speak of kiddush
hashem — the sanctification
of the name of God in action.
Sacrifice is a necessary ac-
companiment to the effort to
make social progress. Our
mission was an effort to
testify, to witness to the ideal
of human brotherhood
through a positive
contribution.

We went because clergymen
were needed to act as
counsellors to the young peo-
ple and to buoy up their
morale. We went because
there are times when cons-
cience demands more than
words, when an inner voice
says "Put your money where
your mouth is!"
The Talmud expresses it
more elegantly in these
words, "One who speaks
beautifully is expected to
fulfill beautifully." Or, in a
kind of Judaic Kantian im-
perative to affirm "bishvili
nivra haolam" — the world
was created for my sake and
to act as if it was — that is to
say, "this depends upon me."

Gorbachev To Free Jews,
Armand Hammer Says

Tucson (JTA) — Mikhail
Gorbachev will eventually let
every refusenik leave the
Soviet Union, according to
Armand Hammer, a personal
friend of the Soviet leader.
"Even more than that,
every Jew who wants to leave
the Soviet Union will be
allowed to do so. That is what
Mr. Gorbachev told me and I

believe him," Hammer said
last week. in an interview
published in the Arizona Post.
Hammer is known in inter-
national business circles as
the "Russian Connection?'
After the Chernobyl nuclear
disaster in 1986, he organized
the mobilization of American
assistance to the Russian vic-
tims of radiation.
