Paul Cowan,
Author, Dies

New York (JTA) — Paul
Cowan, a journalist on the
staff of the Village Voice in
New York for 20 years and
author of five books, died

Sept. 26 at age 48.
A graduate of Harvard
University, Mr. Cowan spent
two years in the Peace Corps
and wrote a book on that ex-
perience, The Making of an
Unamerican. A later book,
An Orphan in History,
documented his return to his
Jewish roots, after having
grown up in an assimilated
family. With his wife Rachel,
a former Unitarian who con-
verted to Judaism and is cur-
rently studying for the rab-
binate, Mr. Cowan co-
authored Mixed Blessings
about intermarried couples.
The book won a 1988 Na-
tional Jewish Book Award.
Mr. Cowan first spoke at
Detroit's annual Jewish Book
Fair in 1982 and again in
1987, when he was joined by
his wife.
Mr. Cowan was the son of
the late Louis Cowan, a
former president of CBS News
and producer of television
programs, such as "The
$64,000 Question" and "The
Quiz Kids." His late mother,
Pualine Spiegel Cowan, was
of the family that initiated
and owned the Spiegel
catalogue.
As Mr. Cowan did research
for his An Orphan in History,
he learned that the family's
last name had been Cohen
and that his great-great-
grandfather was a rabbi in
Lithuania.

Israeli Space Satellite
Is Functioning Well

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Ofek One,
Israel's first space satellite,
has functioned well since its
launch early last week. A U.S.
State Department spokesman
last week denied any involve-
ment in the Israeli space
project.
The Israeli-manufactured
satellite has been circling the
obe every 90 minutes since
le launch, and its telemetry
ndicates that the solar
energy collector panels and
/ the high-tech instrumenta-
tion they power are operating.
Ofek, which means Hori-
zon, was launched from
Palmachim beach, just south
of Tel Aviv, by an Israeli-made
three stage rocket.
Ofek is believed to be the
only space satellite travelling
from east to west. It was laun-
ched in that direction so that
the first stage fell into the sea
and not into hostile neighbor-
ing nations.
Some jokers have insisted
the satellite was launched
east to west because Hebrew

/

is written from right to left,
unlike most alphabets.
Israel is the eighth country
to successfully launch a
satellite and joins the Soviet
Union, United States, Japan,
France, China Britain and In-
dia in the "Space Club."
The U.S. State Department
said last week that it was not
involved in the launch of
Israel's communications
satellite.
"We were not in any way in-
volved nor did we assist in
this launch," department
spokesman Charles Redman
said. "We don't have any
details on the launch beyond
what has already been re-
ported by the Israelis."
Redman had no direct com-
ment on whether the United
States believes the satellites
could be used for military
purposes.
"Israel's leaders have
stressed that the role of the
satellite launch is for peaceful
purposes of space research
and technological advance-
ment," Redman said.
