Troy and Traverse City con-
gregations met to discuss how
they would work together.
The group gathered in
Mount Pleasant — a city
whose name aptly reflects the
tone of the talks, the rabbi
said.
"There was such good will
and a desire to make things
work," he said. "Everybody
was willing to give."
Rabbi Sleutelberg arranged
to spend alternating weeks in
Troy and in Traverse City. He
served at the Troy Jewish
Congregation for Rosh
Hashanah and was in
Traverse City this week for
Yom Kippur services. A stu-
dent rabbi has been hired to
work the opposite schedule so
neither congregation would
be without a rabbi on the
High Holy Days.
While he's just beginning
his position, Rabbi
Sleutelberg already has made
his mark in Traverse City.
Beth El member Joel Miller
recalled, "The first night he
gave a sermon, the place was
just jammed. The next time
he came, we couldn't even get
a seat. I've never seen the
temple so filled."
Working with two congrega-
tions, driving back and forth
each week between Troy and
Traverse City, might strike
some as less than appealing.
Rabbi Sleutelberg himself
admitted, "There's hardly
been a person who hasn't
thought I was crazy."
But he's looking forward to
the challenge. "I want to
work with congregants," he
said. "I want lay participa-
tion. I want to know what
they want. We'll work
together. And that's a rabbi's
dream." D

Sher Criticizes
W. Germany
Bonn (JTA) — An American
official sharply criticized
West Germany for denying ac-
cess to the files of Nazi war
criminals.
Neal Sher, head of the U.S.
Justice Department's Office
of Special Investigations,
which tracks down suspected
war criminals living in the
United States, addressed a
seminar in Ludwigsburg.
It marked the 30th anniver-
sary of the establishment of
the state prosecutor's office
there.
According to Sher, West
German practices raise suspi-
cion that this country would
not willingly open its ar-
chives until the last Nazi is
dead.
