W
ay back in 1891, it
was known as Tem-
ple Beth El
Women's Club . . . 34 years
later, in 1925, the local lassies
became part of the National
Council of Jewish Women
which had been,organized out
Chicago way in 1895.
Through the years, the local
NCJW has had projects
galore in assisting the needy
. . . now comes the third
straight year of helping
Jewish persons living in the
inner city . . . referred to them
by the Jewish Vocational
Service.
The first event, a lunch and
musical program at its offices
on Southfield Road, is Sept.
29.
Reaching out is what the
"Up and Out" project of
NCJW, Greater Detroit Sec-
tion, does for the men and
women served by the Project
Outreach program of Jewish
Vocational Service.
Twice yearly, these inner ci-
ty residents, cut off from
Jewish contacts we all take
for granted, are bused to the
NCJW offices. And reach
them is what the dedicated
volunteers do . . . They serve
lunch, chat and touch these
people who are frequently
without family or friends.
While Phyllis Bratt and
Dorothy Mills belt out songs
by Irving Berlin, gals like
Horty Falk and Ada Feldman
take the folks in hand for a
whirl around the dance floor
. . . And they encourage them
to sing as well . . . Last year,
in the midst of a Jewish
songfest, one elderly
gentleman shyly requested
permission to do a solo .. .
"I'm Dreaming Of A White
Christmas."
What makes NCJW's par-
ticipation in this program
even more special is that,
while many organizations
host Project Outreach people,
all rely on the once-a-month
bus service provided by
Jewish Vocational Service .. .
and no buses means no
method of bringing them out
. . . NCJW foots the bill for
their buses, ensuring extra
trips and extra treats.
Other groups could enlarge
their pleasure if they would
also fund the bus travel.
The "Up and Out" program
was started by Barbara Stone
in 1985 . . . Babs Kaufman is
chairgal of the Project
Outreach afternoon.
ETHEL AND HAROLD
"Hutch" Bobroff send hellos
and happy New Year wishes
to the friends they left behind
four months ago . . . and
already miss . . . The popular
couple now live in the Aven-
tura area of North Miami
Beach, Fla. . . . same region
as "Hutch's" brother Morry
and sister-in-law Sylvia
Bobroff.
Before moving, Temple
Israel gave Ethel a retire-
ment party honoring her 30
years of service in its Hebrew
school.
"SHOW TIME," annual
donor luncheon by Infants
Service Group, is Oct. 19, 12
noon, at Adat Shalom
Synagogue . . . Program
chairperson is Eleanor
Riseman . . . For tickets to the
usual sellout, call Arlene
Miller, 855-2246, or Lorraine
Star, 357-5526 . . . Overall
chairgals are Audrey Glad-
man and Lillian Antman.
OCT. 2 12 noon to 4 p.m., is
drive to test blood for possible
bone marrow donation to
leukemia victim Ira Jannertt
. . . that could save his life .. .
It'll be at Birmingham Tem-
ple, 12 Mile between Inkster
and Middlebelt . . . Call
Kathy Pedit, 855-0620, or
Resa Jannett, 352-8579, for
appointment or more
information.
BELATED CONGRATS
. . . to Shophie and Joe
Lupovich . . . on their 50th
anniversary.
"FALL FROLIC" is affair
in planning stages by the
amazing Singles Extention
Group sponsored by Temple
Israel for singles 50 and over
. . . Date is Nov. 13 for the
organization that now has
almost 500 members.
DON'T MESS with Willie
Geer . . . He looks like a
linebacker, just touches
things and whammo . . . Like
the table next to him at a
local eatery one morning . .
Only a slight backup and
everything but the table itself
went sailing . . . coffee and
salt and pepper shakers . . .
Lukily no occupants or Willie,
as big as he is, would have
crawled under the table in
embarrassed apology.
EVER WONDER what
Probus means, as in Probus
Club? . . . It's an acronym for
professional businessmen,
founded in 1939 to help the
needy . . . Info about Probus
can be gotten by calling Presi-
dent Jack Belkin, 358-5566
. . . Group meets at the Fur-
niture Club in Southfield.
