The January Man with Kevin
Kline and Susan Sarandon,
which is a murder mystery;
and The Experts starring
John Travolta, which is a
comedy?' As Hamlisch points
out, working in the movies is
a whole different experience
than working with live
theater. "In a movie you are
background music. You are
hightening the mood," says
Hamlisch. "Nobody goes to
the movies to hear scorer And
the theater? "You have a
much greater opportunity to
show up what you can do."
That's precisely what
Hamlisch did when he left
Hollywood, in 1975, the year
after he received his three
statues and returned to his
real home — New York and
Broadway. His first shot at
42nd Street glory was
memorable. Along with
lyricist Edward Kleban,
Hamlisch provided the music
for the legendary Michael
Bennett production of A
Chorus Line. And the rest, as
they say, was theater history.
A number of critics have
commented on the so-called
seamless musical style that is
beautifully developed and
realized in A Chorus Line.
The music and lyrics flowed
together, not punctuating the
story as often happens in
musicals, but rather sustain-
ing and nourishing it. It was
a style that Hamlisch and
others tried again, though not
successfully, in 1986 with the
musical Smile. About Smile
there are more than a few
frowns. It was a $4 million
musical, satirizing teenage
beauty pagents, that took six
years to come to fruition.
When it finally had its debut
it was roundly booed by the
critics and never succeeded at
the box office.
Things were problematic
even before opening night. At
one point the Shubert
organization pulled its finan-
cial backing out of the show
and $3 million had to be rais-
ed. Hamlisch did the only
honorable thing — he went on
the road performing a mini
version of the show with
several cast members. And
how did they bill themselves?
They called themselves "The
Marvettes," a marvellous
name.
Before the Smile fiasco
Hamlisch had been batting
1,000 on Broadway. Not only
did he have A Chorus Line
under his belt, but the 1979
Neil Simon production of
They're Playing Our Song, for
which he wrote the music and
Carole Bayer Sager the lyrics,
flourished on Broadway and
successfully went on the road
and into the musical reper-
toire. But, as in baseball,
