living beings, concern for
health and life
(vegetarianism is healthier),
and feeding the poor
(vegetarian foods produce far
more food per acre than meat
and are far sounder
ecologically).
Are there any Jewish voices
besides Isaac Bashevis
Singer's crying out against
injustices to animals? Several
newly formed organizations
offer hope of change: Jews for
Animal Rights seeks to en-
courage discussion of animal
rights and Judaism among
Jews and CHAI works to
bring about better lives for
Israel's animals. CHAI also
makes available a kit of infor-
mational and humane educa-
tion materials on Judaism
and kindness to animals.
As Jews, there is much we
can and should be doing to
relieve and prevent animal
suffering. As individuals, we
can avoid the use of fur and
of products tested on animals;
reduce or eliminate our con-
sumption of flesh; pressure
our local slaughterhouse to
convert to the restraining pen
if it hasn't already; and sup-
port animal welfare and
animal rights organizations,
financially and in other ways.
Within the Jewish organiza-
tions of which we are
members, we can bring up the
issue of animal suffering and
encourage the organizations
to speak out forcefully
against specific cruelties.
By educating ourselves
about animal rights issues
and taking a stand, we are
fulfilling our obligation to act
as "stewards" of the non-
human animals with whom
we share this planet. To be a
Jew means not to cause
animal suffering and to do all
you can to relieve it. Let's
hear more Jewish voices in
the struggle for animal
rights.
