According to Aminoff, 24-year-old Solomon Weil ar- rived in Ann Arbor from Bohemia in 1845 and peddl- ed dry goods and notions across Michigan. His brother Loepold, 25, then brought his wife, Rachel Sittig, and their two children. The other brothers, Moses, Marcus and Jacob, ran the French Shop, a general store in Pontiac, Mich., before they joined Loepold and Solomon in an Ann Arbor tannery, J. Weil and brothers. The Weils were among a dozen Jewish families living in Ann Arbor in the 1840s, Aminoff said. The Weil brothers opened their homes to visiting Jews and kept their households kosher. The conducted the first minyan in Michigan in 1945. Joseph Weil, 73, and his se- cond wife, Sarah Stein, arriv- ed in Ann Arbor in 1850 to join his sons. Joseph's sons ap- parently asked him to buy a sefer Ibrah in Prague, and he brought the scroll when he came to Ann Arbor. Loepold donated his ser- vices as chazzan and shochet, Aminoff said. Jacob studied to be a rabbi, was known for his public speaking skills and served as chaplain of his Masonic lodge. He also was elected alderman twice and nominated for mayor. In her research, Aminoff traced the land transfers of the Jewish cemetery in Ann Arbor, from 1825 until Elijah W. Morgan and his wife sold the cemetery parcel to Loepold and Solomon Weil, Moses Rindskopf and David Widenplatt, who acted on behalf of the Jews Society of Ann Arbor. William P. Groves acquired the land in a sheriff's foreclosure sale in 1871, and a deed filed in November 1899 indicated Samuel Langsdorf had acquired the cemetery in 1894 for one dollar from the estates of Leopold and Solomon Weil. The deed agreement re- quired Langsdorf to acquire land in Forest Hill Cemetery, now at Geddes and Obser- vatory, and move the me- maining graves there from the Jewish cemetery. In 1935, the University of Michigan began buying the land that had been the Jewish cemetery. Beth Israel Memorial Gardens, part of the Arbor- crest Cemetery, was incor- porated in 1955, but the Jewish graves in Forest Hill Cemetery remained there and the gravestones were restored.
