find any discrimination
among the trades. I never real-
ly found any blocks for me as
a woman because I had
already made contacts

Burdge believes women
have problems in business
when they use their feminini-
ty as excuses for special
privileges.

privileges when you're in

Dennis Dickstein, president
of Ralph Manual Realtors,
says more women are in the
construction industry than
people realize.
"I don't think there is a
negative connotation any-
more," says Dickstein.
"Tradespeople don't resist
women builders and the
public is more accepting of
them."
Burdge admits that being a
builder has played havoc with
her social life.
"I guess some men believe
that if I'm a builder I must be
unfeminine. Or they're just
threatened that I'm a suc-
cessful entrepreneur. It's true
I'm going to wear jeans and
boots on the job, but I like
frills, flowers and the door
opened for me." ❑

glamorous job and the hours

Nancy Bonadeo of Bonadeo
Builders in Plymouth agrees
with Burdge that just as in
any other business you have to
earn the respect of the people
with whom you work.
Bonadeo joined her father in
construction after first earn-
ing her business degree and
working as a program analyst
for a time.

"I don't believe I'm treated
exactly the same as a man,"
says Bonadeo. "The language
usually becomes less raucous
when I'm around or the topic
of conversation might change.
"But in business matters, it
doesn't matter if I'm a man or
woman. I'd just better know
what I'm doing."
Burdge says she doesn't see
failure in her cards.
"I never considered failure a
possibility," says Burdge.
"That's not to say it was easy.
There were days when I would
have liked to stay home and
just fold laundry. I often felt
guilty, especially on those days
I wouldn't get home until after
9 p.m. But the kids were very

Washington (JTA) — Presi-
dent Reagan has issued a
Rosh Hashanah message in
which he pledged to continue
to press for the free emigra-
tion of Soviet Jews.
The president said:
"With reverence, awe and
joy, Jewish people around the
globe observe Rosh Hasha-
nah, or the Day of Judge-
ment, and Yom Kippur, the
Day of Atonement. On Rosh
Hashanah, the Almighty
judges the actions of
mankind; and, because it is
the world's birthday takes
stock of His creations. Yom
Kippur is a time for reflection
and introspection.
"During these High Holy
Days, Jews focus their prayers
on their individual deeds and
the need for repentance —
and on the well-being of their
brethren and of all humanity.
The liturgy of these special
days portray the Almighty as
both a stern judge and a com-
passionate father. Those who
observe these Holy Days seek
renewed strength and forgive-
ness for their shortcomings.
"The Jewish New Year is
also a happy time of rebirth
and optimism, a time to look
into the future with hope and
high expectations.
"This past year has seen
limited by nevertheless
positive steps on the issue of
human rights in the Soviet
Union, and I hope progress
will continue and accelerate
as the new year of 5749
unfolds.
