clear the land for each field.
Dombey's group hopes to
raise money for another field
which will be named in
memory of former Tiger Hall-
of-Famer Hank Greenberg.
Dombey hopes that other
North American cities will
follow suit, perhaps resulting
in fields named after other
famous Jewish ballplayers,
such as Sandy Koufax or Al
Rosen.
Dombey will visit Israel
next month. While there he
will scout for locations for a
field. When he returns in
January the local committee
will decide what fund-raising
route to take. They hope to
raise $50-75,000 initially. The
contributions will likely be
tax-deductible. The money
will go through the U.S. Com-
mittee Sports For Israel. "The
funds will be held by them for
our use," says Dombey.
Israel also needs baseball
coaches. Dombey hopes to
send some local people to help
in that area, perhaps college
students who would coach in
Israel during their summer
break. "Maybe we can sub-
sidize their transportation,"
says Dombey, or "provide,
possibly, the funds for a ma-
jor league baseball player .. .
to go over during the winter
for their Chanukah baseball
camp?'
The Ethiopians have been
among the stars of Israel's
baseball program. Many of
them played a game in
Ethiopia which involved
throwing rocks. Consequent-
ly, they are among Israel's top
pitchers.
Dombey helped raise money
to send some Ethiopian im-
migrants to the annual
Chanukah camp, held in the
Herzliya area last December.
The Detroit committee
welcomes new volunteers.
Anyone interested may call
Dombey at 358-4300 during
the day or 355-2266 at night,
or Bob Sternberg at 352-1494.
Another plus baseball may
bring to Israel is more North
American immigrants. "My
wife is always talking about
making aliyah," says Dombey,
"because we have so many
grandchildren there — two
children, 11 grandchildren —
and I said, 'How can I go to
Israel, there's no baseball: "
But when he saw the debut
game in Jerusalem last year,
