Rome (JTA) — The Palestine
Liberation Organization can
' decisively influence Israel's
parliamentary elections Nov.
1, according to Labor Party
Knesset member Abba Eban.
"A clear declaration, the
recognition of Israel and the
renunciation of terrorism (by
the PLO) would help the
Labor Party," Eban told
reporters after meetings with
Foreign Minister Giulio An-
dreotti and Socialist Party
leader Bettino Craxi.
Eban, a former foreign
minister and current chair-
man of the Knesset Foreign
afairs and Defense Commit-
tee, is on a mission on behalf
of Foreign Minister Shimon
Peres, leader of the Labor
Party.
He is visiting Western
( European capitals to per-
suade national leaders not to
endorse purported plans by
the PLO to declare an in-
dependent Palestinian state
in the West Bank and to set
up a government in exile.
He is also urging Western
European countries to pres-
sure the PLO to recognize
Israel. The Labor Party is
"ready to negotiate with any
Palestinians disposed to
recognize Israel and renounce
terrorism," Eban said.

French Prelates
Protest Film

Paris (JTA) — France's two
highest ranking Catholic
prelates have added their
voices to protests of The Last
Temptation of Christ, the
Martin Scorsese movie which
is scheduled to open here at
the end of the month.
Cardinal Jean-Marie Lusti-
ger, Archbishop of Paris, and
Cardinal Albert Decourtray,
Archbishop of Lyon and presi-
dent of the Episcopalian Con-
ference of French Bishops,
took the unusual step of issu-
ing a formal communique to
express their outrage.
But while their communi-
que demands "respect for
Jesus, our Lord, and for the
truth of the scriptures," it
avoids the anti-Semitic in-
timations that were contain-
ed in some of the protests
against the film by fun-
damentalist Protestant
groups in the United States.
Still, Jewish circles in
France fear that the showing
of the film could give extreme
right-wing circles the oppor-
tunity to attack the Jews in-
volved in the film's financing,
including Lew Wasserman,
chairman of MCA-Universal
Pictures.
