Masada Concert
Concludes 40th

Aviv — On Oct. 13,
Gregory Peck will host an
event at the foot of Masada to
L culminate Israel's 40th an-
' niversary celebrations. Yves
Montand will join Peck in this
salute to Israel.
Entitled "Musical Master-
piece at Masada," the concert
will feature Zubin Mehta con-
ducting the Israel Philhar-
monic Orchestra and the
"Choirs of Israel" performing
Mahler's Second Symphony
before an audience of 4,000.
As the orchestra performs
the Mahler piece, Masada
will be illuminated by 400
projectors timed to the strains
of the symphony. During the
final movement of the sym-
phony, 12 groups of 40 Israeli
children, representing the 12
tribes of Israel, will descend
the mountainside bearing
torches, followed by a
fireworks display. Dramatic
readings of significant
moments in Jewish history
will also be included in the
program.
Proceeds from the event
will benefit Keren-or, an
organization devoted to
building educational
facilities, sports complexes
and cultural centers in Israel,
and the Jewish National
Fund for planting trees in
Israel.

Court Orders
Cross Removed
From Base

Washington (JTA) — A
federal district court judge in
Washington on Tuesday
ordered the removal of a
65-foot illuminated cross
which has dominated the
night sky over a U.S. Marine
base in Hawaii for more than
20 years.
Judge Thomas Hogan's de-
cision was a victory for the
Jewish War Veterans of the
USA, which contended in a
lawsuit that the cross, as a
religious symbol erected on
government property and
maintained by public funds,
violated the constitutional
prohibition against
government-established
religion.
The cross was erected in
1966 for a sunrise Easter ser-
vice at Camp H.M. Smith on
Oahu.

To All Our
Relatives
and Friends,
Our wish for a
year filled with
happiness,
health and prosperity.

New Year to All Our Friends
