Collins fully understands
Israeli and Jewish suspicions
of the world in general and
the Arabs in particular.
"Israel remembers," he said.
"The truth is that Israel has
always fought its own wars
without any real assistance
from an outside party. People
have to understand that
Israel is the only country that
stops terrorism."
But he feels that Israel has
to take some real action to
change the situation as it
stands now.
"Israel, as a nation and as
a people, can't afford another
20 years of occupation. What
Israel needs is someone like
De Gaulle, someone to
liberate Israel from occupa-
tion," Collins says, adding
> that in his opinion, "Israel
has too much politics and not
enough statesmanship.
"During my stay in Israel,
I have made one observation
in particular: The Palesti-
nians have to convince Israel
that they really want peace.
The Palestinians on the West
Bank need to develop their
own leadership and not rely
on the PLO, Jordan or Syria.
"The PLO has failed in get-
( ting the Palestinians closer to
their dreams to be in control
of their own destiny. The on-
ly thing the PLO has succeed-
ed in is proving that their
main goal is destruction and-
not coexistence. Israel and
Jews have good memories.
After 40 years, the only con-
clusion that can be drawn is
that the Arabs want to
destroy them."
He believes that the current
situation can be solved only
by direct talks between the
Israelis and the Palestinians,
with no other involvement.
"The Palestinians have to
convince the Israelis that
they really want peace," Col-
lins said, "and this can only
be done if the population on
the West Bank and in the
Gaza Strip will squash the
PLO.
"Once the Palestinians
decide to protest peacefully
and to relinquish terrorism,
they will have the capability
of freeing Israel from the
prison of occupation."
Collins doesn't believe that
the superpowers can serve
any positive role in the
negotiations, since they have
their own agendas.
Collins will return to the
United States in October with
his wife, Candace, a
photographer, and their
8-year-old daughter,
Chauvon.
His exhibition, including
the 40th anniversary
lithograph for Israel entitled
"Faces of Israel," will then go
