pers permitted him to
telephone her and even to ar-
range for a large cake to be
delivered to her on the occa-
sion of their 25th wedding an-
niversary. Then all contact
ceased.
The total silence was
broken only by the sudden an-
nouncement of his execution
on charges of heading an
Israeli espionage network.
Mrs. Hallak rebutted these
outrageous accusations in a
"Public Challenge to the
Murderers of 'the Doctor of
the Poor,' " which was
published in the Lebanese
press and in Le Monde (Paris),
March 5, 1986.
Three days before the kill-
ing of Dr. Hallak, the Beirut
police found the body of
> Ibrahim Benisti, another
Jewish kidnap victim. Accor-
ding to the coroner's report,
Mr. Benisti's body bore signs
of torture and beatings to the
head. He had been shot twice
and then strangled.
Haim Cohen, 38, was the
first Jewish hostage to be kill-
ed, on Dec. 24, 1985. A few
, days later the body of Pro-
fessor Isaac Tarrab, 70, a
retired professor of
mathematics, was found.
Rosemary Cohen stressed
that neither her brother-in-
law nor Professor Tarrab was
involved in politics or in the
Arab-Israel conflict. Mr.
Cohen and his wife had in
fact declined the opportunity
to go to Israel because they
felt themselves deeply rooted
in Lebanese society, she said.
The recent release of the
French hostages has provided
important new information
on the links among the
various terrorist groups
operating in Beirut. The
Frenchmen had been kidnap-
ped by Islamic Jihad, which is
considered the security arm of
the Hezbollah, or Party of
God, an Iranian-inspired
Shi'ite Muslim organization.
In Ayatollah Ruhollah Kho-
meini's speeches calling for
an international Organiza-
tion of the Oppressed on
Earth, he has declared this to
be synonymous with the
worldwide Party of God.
At various times French
and American hostages were
kept together. Thus Marcel
Fontaine, the diplomat who
was one of three Frenchmen
:-A) released in early May,
reported that his cellmate
was Terry Anderson, the
American Associated Press
correspondent who had been
kidnapped in March 1985 and
is still being held captive.
The fact that Dr. Hallak
treated the French hostages
and that they were held with
the Americans proves that
