road to peace is long and ar-
duous, and we must be strong,
bold, and imaginative. Let us
remember that even the im-
perfect peace that we have
r with Egypt is better than the
L, wars our two countries fought
C against each other.
The 40 years that passed
since the establishment of the
) State of Israel have witness-
! ed great achievements,
perhaps greater than those of
any other modern nation-
state. Under the most trying
circumstances, we have built
a country of which we can be
proud.
Our deep commitment to
democracy and our belief in
justice and equality to all our
t7 citizens, will once again be
demonstrated as we hold free
and open elections in the corn-
ing year. In spite of our dif-
ferences over policy, we shall
j remain united behind these
fundamental principles.

strengthening of our relations

passing year has also witness-
ed an improvement in our
relations with the Soviet
Union. It is our sincere hope
that this trend will continue
and bring with it the ultimate
redemption of Soviet Jewry.
