n the threshold of the
New Year 5749, let c.;
me extend to each
and all of you my best wishes
for a healthy and happy New
Year. In the 10-day period of
introspection, between Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur,
we not only reflect on per-
sonal matters, but also on
issues that concern Israel and <
the Jewish People as a whole.
And, just as individuals are
faced with challenges, so are (
nations.
Now as in the past, our
chief concerns are to ensure
the security of Israel, tom
achieve peace with our
neighbors, and to gather the --'•
Jewish People in our ancient
land.
As ever, and above all, we
remain committed to Israel's c,
security. From a position of
strength, unyielding to
violence and hostilities, we
shall do all we can to preserve
Israel as a live democracy
with a stable Jewish majori-
ty. The IDF will continue to
be the strongest army in the
Middle East and one of the (-)
best in the world. Through-
their strength, resolve, and
commitment to human
values, our security forces
will also advance us towards
the achievement of a true and
lasting peace.
The passing year has been
a meaningful reduction of
tensions on the international
scene. Under the auspices of
the United States and the
Soviet Union, six of the seven
on-going regional conflicts ap-
pear to be moving towards
peaceful settlement. Realiz-
ing full well that peace is an
essential element of our
security, we must seize this
opportunity and launch a
bold initiative for peace in the
Middle East.
We must not wait so that
others will decide for us — we
must take the future in our
hands. Jewish history is what
we created and did by
ourselves; Jewish tragedy is
what others did to us. The
