children, three to four weeks
before.
Talk to your child about the
changes he sees. "The
seasons begin to change. New
Year's cards are put out. The
bakeries have round challahs
instead of rectangular ones.
There's lots of hustle and bus-
tle in the synagogues —
changing ark covers, putting
out holiday prayerbooks, add-
ing seating."
Rotenberg likes reading
books, as well as singing
along to records and tapes, do-
ing arts and crafts projects,
going shopping for groceries
and new holiday clothes,
cooking holiday foods and set-
ting a holiday table.
"Buy a toy shofar, make a
honey jar, take a trip to a
farm and buy apples, make
New Year's cards," she says.
In the same vein, she en-
courages parents to take their
child to High Holiday ser-
vices. From an educational
standpoint, it doesn't matter
if the child attends regular
services or children's services.
"Hear, smell, touch — kids
have to do it themselves to
make it meaningful," Roten-
berg says. "And always talk to
them about what they're do-
ing."

Toronto (JTA) — Canada's
attorney general Ramon
Hnatyshyn has signed a
preferred indictment against
Imre Finta, the first person to
be charged under Canadian
law with crimes against
humanity.
The preferred indictment
means that Finta will not
face a preliminary hearing
but will go directly to trial.
Finta, 77, appeared in On-
tario Supreme Court recent-
ly and will appear again in
court on Sept. 15, when a
trial date will be set.
The eight-point indictment
charges Finta with commit-
ting both war crimes and
crimes against humanity dur-
ing World War II. It alleges
that in 1944 he unlawfully
confined 8,617 Jews at Szeged
in Hungary and stole jewelry,
money and other valuables.
He is further charged with
the deaths of Jews.
Finta is free on $100,000
bail. Last December he was
ordered by court to pay
$30,000 to Sabine Citron for
telling a reporter that her ac-
cusations against him were a
lie.

During this most holy time of year,
we remember all the contributions
we meant to make last year . . . and
forgot; and what we intend to give in
the coming year .. .
The Jewish National Fund has ex-
perienced the destruction of 35,000
acres of pastureland and forests dur-
ing the past six months, at a cost of
over $40 Million. The JNF needs
your contributions to offset this
catastrophy.
This year, on the High Holidays,
make a promise . . . and keep it: help
the JNF.
