Judaic Studies Center Lists New Schedules The Center for Judaic Studies at Wayne State University will host a series of major events throughout the fall term. These include individual lectures, symposia and an international con- ference held with the assistance of the University of Michigan. The following is a tentative list of the Center's activities: Prof. Calvin C-roldschei:L-1, specialist in the study of Jewish communities, will speak Oct. 9 at the Jewish Community Center, co- sponsored by the Center. He will speak on "The Jews of America in the 21st Century: A Vision of the Future." On Oct. 10, Prof. Gold- scheider will speak at WSU on "The Social Sciences and the Study of Jewish History and Culture." An international con- ference of biblical scholars will be convened Oct. 30-Nov. 2 at WSU, the Jewish Center and the University of Michigan. Talmudist David Weiss Halivni will visit Nov. 13-14. Halivni, who is professor of religion at Columbia Univer- sity, will conduct a Talmud seminar with local rabbis and lay people. He will also speak at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, where he will help celebrate the congregation's acquisition of a new Torah scroll. Halivni will speak on "The Significance of Law in Jewish Life." The following day, he will be at the University of Michigan where his hosts will be the Programs in Jewish and Religious Studies as well as the law school. CJS will sponsor a series of occasional lectures on "Israel and the Middle East After 40." Bernard Lewis, professor emeritus at Princeton University and director of the Annenberg Institute for Ad- vanced Near Eastern and Judaic Studies, has agreed to serve as resident scholar in March 1989. Prof. Lewis will give a series of talks and con- duct seminars on "Israel and the Middle East: The Past and The Future." Yehuda Amichai will visit following Lewis. He will speak about the current state of letters in Israel and give readings of his poetry.
