WE WISH EVERYONE A HAPPY, HEALTHY NEW YEAR

and wonder, 'Where can I
save money?' "
At the same time, Marcus
feels strongly that every pen-
ny she invests in her
children's Jewish education is
money she invests in the
future of the Jewish
community.
Or, as one Southfield resi-
dent commented, "Yes, it's ex-
pensive being Jewish. Bet-
ween paying the tuition for
three children in Jewish day
schools, keeping kosher and
charitable gifts, I figure we're
spending about $20,000 a
year.
"Is it worth it? Absolutely.
My Jewish life, my children's
Jewish future, is the most im-
portant investment I can
make." ❑

I NEWS 1

Swede Pursues
Wallenberg

(JTA) — The Swedish
government is taking serious-
ly a report by a well-known
Swedish businessman and
novelist that Raoul
Wallenberg was alive as
recently as 1986.
Kenne Fant, former presi-
dent of Sweden's largest
movie studio, Svensk Film In-
dustri, says he learned from a
reliable source now living in
the West that "an old Scan-
dinavian diplomat" who
helped save Jews in Budapest
during World War II was
treated at a Soviet prison
camp hospital on Dec. 22,
1986.
Fant, 65, a popular writer of
novels based on fact, says he
spent six years researching
the story of the Swedish war-
time diplomat sent to Buda-
pest toward the end of World
War II at the request of the
U.S. War Refugee Board. He
is the author of R, a book
about Wallenberg.
Fant says he is unable to
disclose publicly the name of
his source, a former Soviet
citizen now living in the West
who fears for his family still
living in the Soviet Union. He
has, however given the Swed-
ish Foreign Ministry the
names of the Soviet emigres
he interviewed.
In addition to the prison
hospital account, Fant said
reliable witnesses confirmed
that a man fitting Wallen-
berg's description was in the
psychiatric hospital in
Blagoveshchensk, near the
prison camp in the same city,
around the period of Febru-
ary-December 1978.
Fant told The New York
Times that he not only
believes Wallenberg was alive
two years ago, but may still be.
