PART TWO of the controversial Pope John Paul II-Kurt Waldheim
saga took place in June when the Pontiff flew to Vienna for a a five-
day visit to Austria. Jewish groups who protested last year when the
Pope agreed to meet Waldheim at the Vatican, again criticized the
Catholic leader for honoring the Austrian president despite his past
affiliations with the Nazis.

BLACK MONDAY hit Wall Street on October 19, plunging the Dow Jones more than 500 points and setting
off a tidal wave of financial fear. Jewish charities were among those affected by the record losses.
