Yet, even quitting high school wasn't a problem, merely a setback. Undaunted, Mandel eventually finished his high school equivalency and became a door-to-door carpet salesman. Within two years, not only did he own two carpet outlet stores, he became boss to 24 employees. Eventually, however, Man- del grew restless with carpet sales and decided to branch out into novelty toys, some- thing that more closely repre- sented his point of view and whacky humor. One item, the Uncle Sherman flasher doll appropriately undressed un- der der a trenchcoat, was one of his favorites and drew a great deal of comment from cust- omers. His break into show busi- ness came while vacationing in Los Angeles. After drop- ping in on amateur night at The Comedy Store, a local comedy nightclub, he took r the stage at the urging of his i friends. Nervous energy pro- I pelled his impromptu act and Mandel was surprised when the audience liked his antics enough to laugh. By sheer coincidence, the producer of the comedy-game show, "Make Me Laugh," was in the audience and agreed with the audience assessment of his ability. Soon after, he was signed to do 15 episodes of the comedy-game show with- in a three day period. So he traded in carpet sales for laughs and has been enter- , taining the masses ever since. His nervous energy prevails today and is the lifeblood of his act. "I have no idea what I will do on stage before or even while I am doing it," Mandel commented. "I just have a good time and hope for laughs." Should the laughter die or fail to come at all, Mandel relies on his trademark sur- gical glove routine as a back- up. The glove is placed low enough on his head to cover his nose, so with every breath, he takes on the characteristic features of a fingered bubble- head. When he is not on the road, Mandel is constantly plan- ning ahead — thinking about new movie projects, music videos, record albums and specials for HBO. He has already starred in three feature films, "A Fine Mess," "Walk Like A Man," and "Watch Your Step." Perhaps the one ongoing project that Mandel takes seriously is his role of emergency room physician, Dr. Wayne Fiscus on "St. Elsewhere." He fiercely defends the series, now in its sixth season, and particular- r Complimentary Hors D'Oeuvres Introducing THE KEVIN DE COSTA QUARTER • 30325 WEST SIX MILE ROAD • LIVONIA, MI 48152 • Advertising in The Jewish News Gets Results Place Your Ad Today.
