It just gushes out, particularly on stage where the 31-year-old Jewish comedian and star of the NBC-TV series, "St. Else- where," generates the kind of kinetic energy and improvisa- tional style that live audi- ences love. When Mandel is not on the set of St. Elsewhere, he takes humor on the road. It is there on stage that Mandel's per- sonality seems to take on a life of its own, saying and do- ing whatever comes to his mind. Although he has no idea of what his monologue will be during his act, he isn't afraid of letting spontaneity take over, sending his routine down a path different from what he might have planned. Whacky though his act may be, Mandel's act con- tains no religious humor. "None of my act has anything to do with my reli- gion," he said seriously, "because that is not my sense of humor. I don't talk about religion, politics or any par- ticular person." "I'm not asked much about being Jewish," he laughed, "if you want to know, yes, I was circumcised. Seriously though, being Jewish is a per- sonal thing, not something that I could use in any im- provisational act." Because his act shies away from derogatory humor, it isn't surprising to find that much of his on-stage persona mimics many of his childhood pranks. The only difference is that now he won't get ground- ed by his parents and audi- ences pay to see him perform. It was a different story grow- ing up in rIbronto. Canada, where only his parents, a com- mercial lighting salesman and a real estate broker, and the school principal seemed in- terested in his behavior. Their interest stemmed from stopping crazy high school stunts rather than pro- moting them. Like the time he contacted an unsuspecting local construction company to arrange for bids on a bogus plan to enlarge the school li- brary. Then there was the time that he entered a math class from a ladder placed at a third floor window. However, despite warnings against such behavior, Man- del never really stopped pushing his zaniness to the limit and wound up being ex-
