Left vs. right, religious vs. secular, Ashkenazi vs. Sephardi, Lotan's list of troubles scrat- ches only the surface of a country Schonfeld attempts to explore in depth. But despite the grim view of Israeli life he displays in the film, the 34-year-old director insists his "passionate link with Israel" remains intact. Born and raised in New York, product of a "fervent Zionist, modern Orthodox" upbringing, Schonfeld said in an interview that "my Jewish identity is tied up with my love of Israel!' Growing up, said Schonfeld, a slight man with unruly black hair, a dark scraggly beard and white-rimmed eyeglasses, "my outlook on Israel was highly uncritical, although in American life I considered myself on the left. I protested our involvement in Vietnam, but I rejected much of what I would hear that was negative about Israel." In the wake of the Lebanon War, however, Schonfeld sens- ed that things had changed in Israel. He was living in Lon- don, making documentary films for British television, when he set out for Israel "to make a broad film, without a blueprint. The film is our response to the reality we met there!' Schonfeld acknowledged critics who charge that the film does not present a "balanced view" of Israel's troubles — the voices in "Shattered Dreams," heard in conversations, arguments, demonstrations and riots, are those of the extremes. Rabbi Meir Kahane de- nounces Arabs at an outdoor rally, while his Jewish op- ponents heckle from the sidelines. A contingent of Israel peace activists flies off to Romania to meet with of- ficials of the Palestine Libera- tion Organization, and returns to the jeers of their right-wing countrymen. Ac- cording to a cool review by The New York Times' Walter Goodman, "The middle is slighted?' But the effect, said Schonfeld, was intentional. "In America today, there is an unshaken notion that there is only one story to tell about Israel, and it has to be told over and over again. If you don't reiterate and reiterate and reiterate how beleaguered Israel is, it's not enough."
