COUNCIL OF ORTHODOX RABBIS • MERKAZ
It is with a sense of shock and dismay that
the COUNCIL OF ORTHODOX RABBIS OF
GREATER DETROIT feels compelled to respond
to the unconscionable AD printed in the JEWISH
NEWS of AUGUST 19, 1988, entitled "RUTH IN-
TERMARRIED TOO." The AD continues its
blasphemy by stating that Moses and Queen
Esther also intermarried.
It is incumbent upon us to set the record
straight. Intermarriage is considered in the eyes
of Torah as one of the most fundamental viola-
tions of Jewish Law. Torah tells us that in some
ways it is worse than adultery and incest (RAM-
BAM HILCHOS ISUREI BIAH — Chap. 12 —
Halachah 7).
It is unthinkable that a Jewish place of wor-
ship would, by openly soliciting intermarried
couples, give its defacto approval to this tragic
situation. Intermarriage is destroying the fabric
of Judaism today: It is our duty to fight it with
any and every weapon we have at our disposal,
not G-d forbid to condone it in any shape or
form.
The advertisement was also a slap in the face
to every true convert who has converted ac-
coding to the law of Torah. When one converts
to Judaism according to HALACHA, he not only
assumes the obligations of Torah but also all the
rights and privileges of a born Jew.
The contention made in the AD that many
converts fear that they will not be accepted in
Jewish Congregations, is totally inaccurate. The
COUNCIL OF ORTHODOX RABBIS has perform-
ed many Halachic conversions. In all cases, the
individuals have been incorporated into the
mainstream of the Jewish Community.
This ad shocks the sensitivities of many
members of our community and is especially of-
fensive to our converts who have made great
personal sacrifices to convert according to
Halacha. At a time when Jewish unity is of ut-
most importance, such ads fan the flames of divi-
sion in our community.
Wishing the Jewish community a
Happy and Prosperous New Year
