Nivys First To Endow
Holocaust Encyclopedia
The Holocaust Memorial
Center announced Solomon
and Aliza Nivy have enrolled
as the community's premier
sponsors of the Center's for-
thcoming encyclopedia, The
World Reacts to the Holocaust,
1945-1990.
Nivy was graduated from
the Hebrew University in
Jerusalem with a Master of
Arts degree in Hebrew
literature and Jewish history,
and agrarian economics.
Both Nivys served Israel
during the War of In-
dependence. He was ad-
ministrative director of the
Israeli army's liaison office
with the International Red
Cross. Having begun nursing
studies at Hadassah Hospital
in Jerusalem, Mrs. Nivy was
graduated from the Beilinson
Nursing School and served
there in that capacity.
In the 1950s, Nivy earned
an additional graduate
degree in economics at Wayne
State University and started
a doctoral program at the
University of Michigan. Mrs.
Nivy enrolled at Wayne
State's College of Nursing for
an advanced degree.
Nivy, who serves on the
HMC board of directors, is a
member of its academic ad-
visory committee which
monitors the preparation of
the encyclopedia. This multi-
volume work will document
the reaction to the Holocaust
in fifty countries as evidenc-
ed by governmental pro-
grams, literature, media
coverage, restitution efforts
and public response.
Dr. David S. Wyman, pro-
fessor of history at the
University of Massachusetts,
chairs the project's editorial
board, and Dr. Nan E. Kar-
wan Cutting of Cornell
University, is the managing
editor. Dr. Guy Stern, Wayne
State University, heads the
academic advisory
committee.
