U.S. Criticism
Will Not Stop
Deportations

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Prime
Minster Yitzhak Shamir in
an interview on Israeli radio
last week said that the depor-
tation of Palestinian and in-
tifada leaders will continue
despite the strong protest
from the United States.
"We are responsible for
security in the area, not the
Americans," Shamir said.
Shamir noted that differ-
ences of opinion between
friends are natural, denied
that the deportations of
Palestinians was policy, but
said it is necessary to main-
tain Israel's security and
order in the territories.
Premier Yitzhak Shamir
and Defense Minister Yitz-
hak Rabin both told U.S. Am-
bassador Thomas Pickering
Wednesday that the deporta-
tions orders already issued
against 25 Palestinian
leaders will be carried out
after the men have had an op-
portunity to appeal to the
Supreme Court.
Sources said that Pickering
expressed surprise that news
of the protest was delivered by
Deputy Secretary of State
John Whitehead to Oded
Eran, the acting Israeli am-
bassador to the U.S., was
leaked to the press by Israeli
officials.
Foreign Ministry officials
met in Jerusalem last week to
discuss further responses to
the United States, both
through private diplomatic
channels and in public
statements.

Politics, Rabbis:
Don't Mix

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
Labor party last week issued
a statement calling on rabbis
and rabbinical court judges to
"abstain from political activi-
ty."
The statement, issued by
the party's Platform Commit-
tee for Religious Affairs,
surprised many.
campaign
However,
spokesman Avram Burg, son
of former Religious party
leader Yosef Burg, and
himself religious, said the
party's statement "represents
a new style and therefore a
new approach as well."
The statement also reaf-
firmed several Labor Party
positions, including opposi-
tion to religious coercion, pro-
motion of Jewish unity
among all streams of
Judaism, and opposition to
the "Who is a Jew?" amend-
ment to the Law of Return.
