BLOOMFIELD `Sha-Boom' Re-Booms At Hustling Ruby D's JN 544-7933 FAMILY DINING he 1954 vintage Wur- litzer juke box is play- ing "La Bomba" or "Sha-Boom Sha-Boom" by the Crew Cuts . . . There's hustle, bustle and laughter all about . . . It's fun dining . . . combin- ed with homecooked food in a very casual atmosphere. Even the sign offers a bit of humor . . . "Ruby D's Since 1988" . . . Located at Sugar Tree on Orchard Lake Road, north of Maple, Ruby D's is operated by Ruby Dennison and son Louis Dennison .. . She is the business manager, hostess and cashier brains .. . He is kitchen boss and chief cook. It started out by folks going to the counter, giving their order, paying, and when ready would be called by name, or, if didn't want their name call- ed out, by number, and waitpersons would bring the food. Things have changed . . with waiters and waitresses now serving at all times. Originally, many folks thought Ruby D's was strict- ly a carry-out and catering operation . . . It does both of these but is essentially a full- service, 1950s restaurant sur- rounded by whatever im- aginable in the way of jars or cans of gourmet foods, halava, imported candies, etc. The "Touch of New York" deli is filled with delicacies to eat in or carry out . . . like Scimitar Meats (coming soon), carried by Nieman Marcus and Bloomingdales, Robertson's sugar-free preserves from England, Run- ning Deer Ranch preserves of California, Smulka Bernstein glatt kosher items, Ratner's kosher frozen soups and vegetarian courses, frozen hors d'oeuvres, Sunshine apricot preserves, Sable & Rosenthal jams and mustards, including honey mustard (they were the first to introduce this delicacy in- America), Manischewitz, Wolff's Rokeach, Streit's, etc. There are over 75 oversized sandwiches served in wicker baskets at Ruby D's . . . About 44 of them have names of tunes that could be on the Wurlitzer juke box . . . "Then Angel" (smoked turkey, muenster cheese, honey mustard and tomato grilled on challah) . . . "My Son The Folksinger" (turkey, pastrami and chopped liver) . . . "Tutti Fruiti" (turkey, tuna, tole slaw on an onion roll) .. . "Cry Me A River" (brisket of beef, turkey, horseradish on onion roll) . . . "Amore" (Genoa salami, mortadella, coppa, provolone, lettuce, tomato, herbed oil on kaiser roll) . . . "Tuxedo Junction" (roast beef, turkey, chicken, cheese, Bermuda onion, let- tuce, Russian dressing) .. . Also "Heat Wave," "At The Hop," "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes," "La Bomba," "Somewhere My Love," "Heat Wave," "Love Me Tender," "Crazy Man Crazy" (an Italian hot dog with sauteed onions, peppers and potatoes on a sub bun) . . . and so much more. A menu sector is called "The Salad Supremes" .. . with 10 salads named after hits by this great Motown group . . . "Only You," "Splish Splash," "Oh Pretty Woman," "Nature Boy," etc. In all, there are 70 kinds of mustards alone . . . and where else can you get peanut but- ter in a tube? . . . Ruby D's has gourmet items very few other places carry . . . 20 dif- ferent garlics, even one called an elephant garlic . . . There's butter from France, herb but- ter that looks like a little salami, tortes, vats of olives, barrels of pickles, pates, im- ported crackers, etc. Behind the counter are 25-pound salamis lying on their sides . . . plus many more "hanging arund" big and small. Louis smokes his own chickens and turkeys, makes blintzes, soups, stuffed cab- bage and other goodies. Ruby D's seats 80 people and opened May 16 of this year to a full house . . . after preparations from September of last year . . . and the oft- asked question, "When are you opening?" The refurbished juke box in a front corner plays "Deep Purple" with Earl Bostick, "In The Mood" and "String of Pearls" by Glenn Miller .. . There's a blackboard "Share Yours" for personal bits, two Corinthian columns (imagine this is a New York-style deli restaurant!) and other decor delights that are among designer Ron Eye's mass of fun, plus antique chandelier amid modern ones . . . blackboards are filled with menu items, shelves packed with food stuffs, and refrigerated cases with oodles of fresh daily specials. Besides Louis' fine smoked chicken, turkey, ribs, etc., he
