The elderly and ailing Nazi war criminals, Ferdinand aus der Fuenten, 79, and Franz Fischer, 86, both Germans, were reported eligible for ear- ly release because of their deteriorating health. But in a recent public opi- nion poll, 56 percent of the respondents indicated they oppose the release of the men, who are known as the "two of Breda" because of their in- carceration in Breda Prison. Of those born after World War II, 61 percent said they were opposed to releasing the men. A slim 51 percent ma- jority of those born before the war opposed releasing them. Aus der Fuenten was chief of the Nazi office responsible for the deportation of Jews in Amsterdam. Fischer held the same position in the Hague. Jerusalem (JTA) — The Jerusalem Religious Council has restored kashrut cer- tification to a youth hostel operated by the Conservative movement, in a move prompted by American Or- thodox groups. The rabbinate's decision overturns a June ruling that withdrew the 15-year-old cer- tification of the popular hostel. Rabbi Yehoshua Pollak, head of kashrut super- vision at the rabbinate, liken- ed the hostel at the time to a "monastery" that "destroys the Jewish religion." In welcoming the decision, Rabbi Pesach Schindler, direc- tor of the Center of Conser- vative Judaism in Jerusalem, said that he especially wanted to thank American Orthodox rabbis for their ac- tion on behalf of the hostel.
