I TORAH PORTION I COATS UNLIMITED Sterling Heights Sterling Place 37680 Van Dyke at 16 1/2 Mlle 939-0700 This Year The Shofar Sounds A Call Of Alarm RABBI ALLAN MEYEROWITZ Special to The Jewish News i Tavo paints the pic- ture of Israel at peace, secure and in a posi- tion to build a remarkable Jewish civilization. The Torah describes in great detail how we have the power in our own hands to build a tranquil, blessed society or create a living hell for ourselves and our children. Unfortunately, this idealistic view of Jewish life rarely coincides with reality. Outside events and pressures always seem to intrude on our K Shabbat Ki Tavo: Deuteronomy 26:1-29:8, Isaiah 60:1-22 attempts to reach the Torah's ideal. At one time, the Democratic Party was a safe haven for our people. Inspired by the party's concern for the common man and its compassionate understanding of suffering, Jews felt at home with the Democrats. But recent events seem to be intruding on this once symbiotic relationship. Concerned Jews all over the world should be greatly distressed by the recent Democratic National Conven- tion. It bewilders us that a man who is openly anti- Semitic, openly anti-Israel, who has used anti-Semitism to launch his political career, and excludes issues of concern to Jews from his political agenda,is now considered the "conscience of the Democratic party." Watching Jesse Jackson steal the heart and soul of the convention with his mesmerizing rhetoric and watching the moderate leadership of his party — Carter, Dukakis, Kennedy — buy peace at any price is so reminiscent of other demogogues and dictators. The capitulation within the Democratic Party to Jackson must pain us the most. The fact that Jackson dislikes "Hymies," wants the U.S. to vigorously support a Palesti- nian state and greatly reduce military and economic aid to Israel while aggressively in- creasing aid to Saudi Arabia, is a matter of public record. That Jackson has helped Allan S. Meyerowitz is rabbi of Congregation B'nai Moshe. establish a powerful pro-Arab fund-raising and lobbying ap- paratus, or refuses to meet with the responsible leader- ship of the American Jewish community, is all too clear. But the way in which the par- ty standard-bearer, Mr. Dukakis, has bought peace at the cost of truth and Jewish interests is beyond belief. While defeated candidates of greater stature than Mr. Jackson were vilified or best forgotten at their national conventions (ask Gary Hart, Mo Udall, Ed Muskie or Nelson Rockefeller), the defeated Jackson was depicted in mythic terms and honored ad nauseum. Every speaker from Carter to Dukakis to Bentsen spoke of Jackson like the embodiment of what America is all about. As a Democrat who voted for McGovern, Carter and Mon- dale, this over-sensitive "Hymie" was repulsed by this perversion of the truth. Governor Dukakis, indeed, paid a heavy public price for Mr. Jackson's blessing in the full campaign — the prime- time talk of Jackson's was most remarkable and convin- cing — the video of Jackson's life depicted a 20th century Abe Lincoln. But what was the private price Dukakis paid for his new alliance? What agreements did the two work out over State or Defense of the United Nations or roving ambassador for the Middle East? How many of Jackson's cronies (who share little love for Jews) will be brought into a Dukakis administration? The convention only serves to enhance our fears of these deals and Jackson's future role in the party and the country. What at one time seemed impossible is now very plausible. The Rev. Jesse Jackson could very well become president of our nation. Those of us caring for the future of black-Jewish rela- tions are greatly disturbed that when finally a black man stands near the pinnacle of American power, he is an anti-Semite. The possibility of rebuilding the once potent liberal Jewish-black coalition is in ruins. Moderate black leadership has been replaced by a hostile, angry voice which has subtly used anti- Semitism as a stepping stone to power. We caring Jews begin a new year in great anxiety and frustration.
