N EWS 1 Sidney A. Deitch DETROIT MONUMENT WORKS . Tel Aviv (JTA) — Res. Major General Rehavam (Gandhi) Zeevi, launched his new, right wing, Moledet (Motherland) last week, firmly nailing the motto "transfer" to his masthead as the main plank in the party's platform. The inaugural meeting was attended by several hundred people, mainly older citizens, who applauded wildly every time Zeevi mentioned the word "transfer." Zeevi, presently director of Tel Aviv's Land of Israel Museum at Ramat Aviv, in- sists he plans to remove the Arabs from Israel only by agreement with them, and not by force. He told the gathering that he dares to say aloud — that the Arabs should be removed from Israel — what many Israelis feel in their hearts. Supporters say Zeevi has brought the idea of the transfer of the Arabs out of the closet and presented it to the public view. Meir Kahane's Kach party openly promotes the idea of the forced transfer of Arabs from Israel to the Arab states. The right-wing Tehiya party also supports the idea, but is less blatant in pressing for it as an open policy. According to a Modiin Ezrachi public opinion poll published in Maariv Wednes- day, there has been a marked political shift to the right since the start of the Palesti- nian uprising nine months ago. While 53 percent of the 1,278 people questioned said they had not changed their political position since the unrest began, 32 percent said they had become more hawk- ish, while 14 percent said they had shifted to the left and were more dovish today than previously. Gardner, bet. Coolidge & Greenfield Tel Aviv (JTA) — The Labor Alignment has a slight edge over the Likud bloc according to new polls conducted by the parties. Labor would not, however, win enough votes to form a government on its own if elections were held today. The Likud poll, conducted by the Dahaf organization, gives Labor 42 seats in the 120-seat Knesset versus 40 for Likud. Labor's own poll, conducted by the Dessima organization, puts the breakdown at 43 seats for Labor and 38 for Likud. Likud conducted its poll among 1,175 Israeli Jews from Aug. 7 to 14. Labor polled 1,503 Jews and 1,200 Israeli Arabs during the first half of August. The results of both surveys were published last week in the daily Yediot Achronot. Labor's polling found that the party is likely to lose 40 percent of the backing it has received from Arabs in previous years, Haaretz reported last week. Meanwhile, a poll con- ducted by the East Jerusalem weekly, Al Biadir A-Siyasi, of 500 Arabs living in the Jerusalem area found that only 6 percent intend to par- ticipate in the Jerusalem municipal elections next February. The poll also found that only 15 percent of the respondents support the re- election of Mayor Teddy Kollek. Some 81 percent of those questioned said they had never voted in the municipal elections. Asked whether they would vote for Arab can- didates for the municipal council, 20.8 percent said yes, 43.8 percent said no and 35.4 percent said they had no opinion. IDF Planes Attack Lebanon Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israeli air force planes attacked terrorist targets near the Ein Hilweh and Mieh Mieh camps south of Sidon last week, 24 hours after five Hezbollah gunmen were killed in a clash just north of Israel's security zone in south Lebanon. Reports from the area said three attack helicopters raided targets in the area, causing damage to buildings housing Palestinian militia units. The number of casual- ties was not immediately known. It was the ninth air raid on targets in Lebanon in 1988. Last Wednesday, six Israel Defense Force soldiers were very wounded in the confron- tation. Five returned im- 4 mediately to their unit. 19800 WOODWARD AVE.
