GOP Hopes Many
Jews Will Break
With Dems

New Orleans (JTA) —
Jewish Republicans emerged
from the Republican National
Convention last week with
high expectations that many
of their fellow Jews will cut
their traditional Democratic
ties and vote for Vice Presi-
dent George Bush and his
running mate, Sen. Dan
Quayle of Indiana.
This same hope was ex-
pressed in 1984, but on elec-
tion day some 60 percent of
the Jewish vote went to the
Democratic candidate, former
Vice President Walter Mon-
dale.
Richard Fox, chairman of
the National Jewish Coali-
tion, said there are signs for
greater optimism this year.
"I think that more than
anytime in my lifetime, there
are more undecided Jewish
voters in America today," Fox
said.
Fox and other Jewish Re-
publican leaders said the
Middle East platform adopted
at the convention is the most
pro-Israel ever compared to
the brief mention in the
Democratic platform.
"You at least have a basis
for comparison as to who
represents the best interest of
Jews and the Jewish com-
munity," he said. "It is ob-
vious that has become the
Republican Party of today."
Jewish Republicans are
pointing to an article by Mar-
tin Peretz in The New
which was
Republic
distributed at the convention
charging that anti-Semitism
was displayed on the floor of
the Democratic National Con-
vention last month by some
Jackson supporters during
the debate on a Palestinian
plank.
Longtime Reagan supporter
Jacob Stein noted that
although the plank support-
ing Palestinian self-
determination was not voted
on at the Democratic conven-
tion, the Rev. Jesse Jackson
claimed it could have been
adopted but did not press for
a vote to maintain party har-
mony. Jewish spokesmen for
Massachusetts Gov. Michael
Dukakis have denied that
Jackson could have won such
a vote.
