Dan Collins, who began the
American Legion baseball
season still feeling the effects
of meningitis, hit over .300
this season as the Birm-
ingham shortstop. Collins
played in the Legion All-Star
game at both shortstop and
centerfield.
"He started out slowly,"
says coach Merle Osborn,
"but he ended up hitting
right around .315." Collins'
on-base average was approx-
imately .460. "His stats
would've been better had he
not been ill in the spring,"
adds Osborn.
Collins suffered from men-
ingitis in early spring, forcing
him to miss most of the high
school baseball season.
While Osborn describes
Collins as, "the finest short-
stop I've ever had," he notes
that Collins' hitting has
"come on strong," in the last
two years. Collins went
9-for-15 in a five-game invita-
tional tournament in
Kokomo, Ind., this summer.

Ferndale Nine
Drops Final

The state champion Fern-
dale American Legion
baseball team reached the
final of the national regional
in South Bend, Ind., last
weekend, but lost the title
game, 5-1 to Cincinnati. Cin-
cinnati advances to the
American Legion World
> Series in Connecticut this
week.
Ferndale won their regional
opener, 13-6, over Illinois.
Undefeated pitcher Jason
Novetsky started and threw
six and one-third innings, per-
mitting five runs and nine
hits while striking out three.
Novetsky got the win. David
Katkowsky had two hits.
Jason Markowitz started
and lost game two, as Fern-
dale fell to Wisconsin, 6-2.
Ferndale then edged
Evansville, 2-1, and beat Cin-
cinnati, 6-3. Novetsky won
the fifth game, hurling six in-
nings of a 22-4 rout of Wiscon-
sin. Novetsky allowed two
runs, two hits and fanned
seven. Markowitz pitched the
final three frames. Novetsky
and Katkowsky had two hits
apiece.
Ferndale managed only
three hits as they lost the
final of the double-
elimination tournament.
"One of those days when the
pitching shut us down," ex-
plained Ferndale coach Annis
Joseph.
