Rabbi Schwartz said. "In fact,
Naomi tells Ruth, 'Go back to
your people.'
"Since when does someone
who converts get sent back to
his own people? You go back
to a non-Jewish way of life? Is
this conversion?"
On Zipporah's acceptance of
the Torah at Mount Sinai,
Rabbi Schwartz wondered if
this was conversion by
osmosis. "It certainly isn't
conversion by mikvah (ritual
bath). It wouldn't be conver-
sion by an Orthodox rabbi."
When Aaron and Miriam,
Moses' brother and sister,
question the marriage to Zip-
porah, they are stricken with
a disease of the skin, Rabbi
Schwartz said, "indicating
that they are the ones who
have sinned;' not Moses and
Zipporah.
As for Queen Esther, not on-
ly did her husband not con-
vert, but she didn't even tell
him that she was Jewish,
Rabbi Schwartz said.
The rabbi disagreed with
the Va'ad's position on inter-
marriages today. Equating in-
termarriage with incest and
adultery as the Va'ad has
done, does "irreparable harm
to those who have intermar-
ried and are searching for a
home in the Jewish communi-
ty;' he said.
The intermarriage rate
among Jews in the United
States is estimated at 40 per-
cent. Turning away intermar-
ried couples means driving
Jews out of the community, he
said.
"By saying we will only ac-
cept x or y is tantamount to
signing our own death war-
rant!"
