New York — Yeshiva
University has obtained a
rare 15th century transcript
of the trial of the Jews accus-
ed of the ritual murder of a
Christian infant in Trent,.
Italy.
The documnt is known as
the Trent Manuscript.
The manuscript contains
the testimony of the entire
Jewish community of Trent —
a town in northern Italy —
which was arrested and ac-
cused of the murder of a
Christian infant named
Simon. The body was alleged-
ly discovered near the house
of the head of the Jewish com-
munity shortly after Maundy
Thursday, the Thursday
before Easter of 1475.
Following 15 days of torture,
the "confessions" of 17 of the
Jews were extracted. The
manuscript contains their
testimony, recorded under
each of their names, and is lac-
ed with quotations in Hebrew,

mainly from the Haggadah,
as it was around Passover
when the allegations were
raised.
Of the 17 Jews accused and
tortured, one died in prison,
six were burned at the stake,
and two were strangled.
When a papal emmisary
was sent to Trent to in-
vestigate the circumstances
of the incident, he was run
out of town when the results
of his inquiries led him to con-
tradict the findings of the
local trial. Proceedings were
reopened in 1476 with the
blessing of Pope Sixtus IV,
whose court justified the libel.
By the end of that year, five
more Jews were executed.
The property of the remain-
ing Jews was confiscated and
they were banned from the
town through the 18th cen-
tury. Additionally, the infant
Simon was beatified, an
authorization not overturned
until 1965.
