The group has analyzed some 51 pro-Israel PACs and used federal election commis- sion statistics to highlight the big winners losers and points pro-Israel PACs' preference for incumbents and legislators serving on the key foreign affairs committees. The big winner this year, according to the statistics, is Sen. Howard Metzenbaum (D- Ohio), who received some $142,000 in his battle for reelection. The big loser was Sen. Chic Hecht (R-Nev.), the ultra-conservative Jewish senator who has received far less than Gov. Richard Bryen, his opponent in a bitter elec- tion battle. Sen. Howard Metzenbaum: Big winner. Just in case their sympa- thies aren't clear by their publications, (AET) is dis- tributing bumperstickers that read: "Pray for Pales- tine" and "Congress is an Israeli-Occupied Territory." AET's policy committee in- cludes former Sen. J. William Fulbright and Sen. Charles Percy — names that win no votes of confidence among Israelis supporters in Washington. Jewish Groups Take On NRA Campaign Several major Jewish groups are facing some stiff opposition this week on an gun control. Despite the con- gressional recess, the Na- tional Rifle Association (NRA) is in the middle of a telephone blitz that is overloading switchboards in both Houses. At issue is the so-called "Brady Amendment" to the Omnibus Drug Bill, a measure named after former presidential nevrs secretary James Brady his wife, Sarah Brady, a national leader in the movement to control "Saturday night specials." The amendment would re- quire a seven-day wait to pur- chase a handgun. Supporters of the amendment argue that a waiting period is essential to the enforcement of other handgun regulations, in- cluding the prohibition against the sale of weapons to illegal aliens, felons, and drug addicts. But the NRA, which op- poses gun control of any sort, does not agree. The result has been a lobbying blitz of monumental proportions. Generally, organizations representing police officers have supported the measure, along with the American Jewish Congress, the Ameri- can Jewish Committee and the Anti- Defamation League of the B'nai B'rith. "We've been fighting just a tremendous amount of misin- formation on this bill," said Judy Golub, assistant Wash- ington representative for the American Jewish Committee. "A seven day waiting period doesn't infringe on anybody's rights; if Congress turns the Brady Amendment down, it will be very, very short- sighted." Golub points out that American Jews, who live predominantly in big cities, are among those most direct- ly threatened by the easy availability of cheap hand- guns. Israel Listed With State Washington (JTA) — The State Department's telephone directory for the first time is listing the U.S. consulate in Jerusalem as a diplomatic post inside Israel. The U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv has traditionally been included under "Israel" in the directory, but Jerusalem has been listed with no coun- try at all. Sen. Daniel Moynihan (D- N.Y.), who recently received the landmark May 1988 ver- sion of the directory, said that the State Department had previously denied Israel "recognition of their capital city, Jerusalem" as well as "denied it is their city at all."
