Apparently diGenova view-
ed this refusal to incriminate
others as a lack of coopera-
tion. Pollard spent his first 10
months in a psychiatric ward
for the criminally insane
while interrogators unsuc-
cessfully tried to force him to
implicate other American
Jews despite his repeated
statements that were no
other American Jews work-
ing with him.
George Diffenbacher, head
of the penitentiary's social
services, said Pollard is not a
"mental patient," but "there
are other considerations for
keeping him there."
Prison officials and
diGenova claim Anne is fak-
ing her illness. According to
a letter from a former inmate
who requested anonymity,
Anne seems to be dying. Ap-
parently, prison authorities
are allowing her to waste
away until she dies of
"natural causes?' The ques-
tion of whether Anne's health
is being manipulated to force
Pollard into yielding to
Justice Department pressure
for names, demands an
answer.
Anne was never charged
with espionage, nor with
aiding and abetting, nor with
being an accessory to her hus-
band's actions. Her crime was
only the removal of a suitcase
containing documents. Poly-
graph tests prove she knew
nothing about her husband's
actions on behalf of Israel.
Never in the history of
America has the innocent
spouse of someone convicted of
espionage also been jailed.
Anne's attorney, Nathan
Dershowitz, is not permitted
to see her privately, but must
meet with federal marshals
present. He said publicly that
he has "never seen such treat-
ment of any inmate in an
American prison, regardless
of the crime they committed?'
Paradoxically, it appears
that Jonathan Pollard carried
out the stated desire of Presi-
dent Reagan and Congress in
that he did, in fact, deliver
what had already been of-
fered. Pollard's incipient ac-
tion may have thwarted a
"rogue operation" to weaken
or destroy the links between
America and Israel: once
Israel was discredited, Con-
gress would presumably
reduce or cut off aid — arms
and technology — and no
longer seriously review and
interfere with the shipment of
arms to Arab states. The
question of what was
legitimately stamped secret
and what was marked secret
to protect possibly
unauthorized operations re-
quire investigation.
