I NEWS 1
Women March
For Peace
New York (JTA) — Braving
wilting heat and icy-cold
stares, a small group of
women drawn from a number
of pro-Israel peace groups
have been staging a weekly
vigil here in support of their
Israeli counterparts.
The site of the protest is the
sidewalk in front of 515 Park
Avenue, which serves as head-
quarters for a number of na-
tional Jewish organizations,
including the Conference of
Presidents of Major American
Jewish Organizations, the
World Zionist Organization-
American Section, and
United Israel Appeal.
The vigil is an outgrowth of
a peace rally held on New
York's Upper West Side in
April, when a few thousand
American supporters of
Israel's left-of-center parties
called for negotiations bet-
ween Israel and Palestinians.
The women held their first
vigil a week later, and have
continued to show up each
Monday at 5:30 p.m. ever
since. During a recent steamy
rush-hour, 15 of the women
stood on either side of the
sidewalk, holding signs that
read "Seek solutions — End
the occupation of the West
Bank and Gaza Strip" and
"American Jews speak out."
According to Claire
Kinberg, a demonstrator, the
vigils are an attempt to dispel
the impression that most
American Jews support the
hard-line strategies of the
Likud bloc over the more con-
ciliatory voices of the Labor
alignment and the parties to
its left.
Brandeis Grant
Washington, D.C. — A joint
U.S. House/Senate conference
committee has approved a $3
million grant for Brandeis
University in the Interior Ap-
propriations bill. An addi-
tional $9.375 million in
federal funding is projected
for next year for a $41.5
million science center.
