Adler, Cantor Emeritus 92 FRID'AY,AUbliSf26,Iik38 - • • 4 Five years after being given an aliyah in absentia, Olga Kogan of Albany, N.Y., will be called to the Torah on Satur- day at Congregation B'nai Moshe to receive her long- awaited honor. Olga was twinned with Cin- dy Friedman in 1982 at her bat mitzvah at Congregation B'nai Moshe. At that time Olga and her parents, Yakov and Tanya Kogan, were try- ing to get visas to leave the Soviet Union. The Kogans were permitted to emigrate in November 1987. Olga's twin's brother, Jef- frey Friedman, will be celebrating his bar mitzvah the same time as Olga's aliyah. The Friedmans have been unable to make contact with Jeff's twin despite numerous attempts at mailings and phone calls. "After having seen the suc- cessful outcome for the Kogan family of community pressure on the Soviet Union as well as in Washington, we feel very frustrated at not receiving any response to our letters or calls," Susan Freidman said. "However, Olga's presence at Jeff's bar mitzvah just strengthens our determina- tion that we can succeed in finding our lost twins." Amy Jablin Is Bat Mitzvah Amy Jablin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alan Jablin, will share her bat mitzvah with Riva Baazova during services at Beth Abraham Hillel Moses on Saturday. Riva is the daughter of Rafael and Zina Baazov of Georgian SSR, USSR. Riva's parents first applied for an ex- it visa in 1978 and were refus- ed in 1979 because of army service. Riva will be 13 this year, but because it is forbid- den by Soviet law for anyone under 16 to take part in a religious ceremony, she will be denied her right to be a bat mitzvah. Baazov's sister and father both live in Israel. Two To Twin B'not Mitzvah Carrie Fenton and Jennifer Franklin will celebrate their b'not mitzvah with their Soviet twin, Sofya Gorokhov, 8 p.m. Sept. 9 at Temple Israel. Sofya's family has been try- ing to leave Russia since February 1988. Her father, David, is qualified as a physicist and a mathemati- cian, but since applying for his exit visa he is unable to find work in his field. Her mother, Asya, is an engineer and also has been unable to find employment. The Gorokhovs are religious Jews. David and Asya speak English, and the whole fami- ly speaks Hebrew. Carrie and Jennifer have written to Sofya, but have been unable to make contact with the family. The study, conducted over a four-year period by Dr. Yoram Peri of the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies at 1bl Aviv University evaluated the psychological effects Israel's occupation of the West Bank has had on the IDF. Peri found that a threefold process occurs in the oc- cupier's psyche, beginning with the development of a political-military doctrine within the military ranks This is followed by a self- image crisis among the _1 soldiers, leading to a crisis in civil-military relations. Peri found that civil- military relations are most strained in a "citizen's army" where a majority of the • population performs military service. The problem, he said is exacerbated when opinion is divided on the occupation and subsequent resentment ual of the army's actions by a seg- ment of the society. Peri, who is deputy editor of the Israeli daily Davar, said that without societal support the military is compelled to ,
