Sign Language

cessible to differently abled
persons so they can become
their best selves as Jews and
as people," Rabbi Bogot said.
While the Temple
Emanu-El program is new to
the Detroit area, many
synagoguges and temples
throughout the United States
already provide sign
language for their deaf con-
gregants. As early as the

1940s, the New York Hebrew
Association of the Deaf was
conducting regular Sabbath
services.
Three congregations of
the deaf also have been form-
ed in recent years. These are
Temple Beth Solomon of the
Deaf in California, Temple
Beth Or of the Deaf in New
York and Congregation Bone
Shalom in Chicago.

Auslander

when the club was establish-
ed, having just emigrated
from Hungary. .
Drapkin was a teenager at
the time. She said that some
of the minutes taken at those
early meetings will be dusted
off and reread this weekend.
"The meetings were con-
ducted in English only, even
though we all spoke
Hungarian and Yiddish,"
Drapkin recalled. "They
wanted the newcomers to
learn English."
It was Drapkin's mother,
Fani Auslander Roth, who
came up with the idea of the
family's emergency fund. The
Auslanders also maintained a
long-term loan fund from
which a family member could
borrow up to $1,500 to help
pay for college education or a
home. Each family member
16 years and older would pay
$25 into the fund, Drapkin
said.
"We couldn't wait to turn 16
because it was all so exciting"
said Drapkin's cousin, Larry
Pernick, a member of the
Auslander generation in their
50s.
The Auslanders maintain
burial, plots at Oakview
Cemetery in Royal Oak. One
of the activities this weekend
will be a memorial service.
Other events include an oneg
Shabbat, services at Temple
Israel, a dinner-dance and a
picnic.
During their heyday, the
Auslanders met regularly for
picnics and pot-luck dinners.
Newlyweds were given fur-
niture and dishes and new
parents were provided with
diapers, courtesy of the fami-
ly linen supply and laundry
business. Newcomers were
given work in the family
grocery business.
Time has changed the face
— and the needs — of the
Auslander family. The loan
fund fell into disuse about 10
years ago and, when it was
finally closed, each family
member was paid a $75 divi-
dend. The emergency fund
was dissolved even earlier.
While the family is not as
close knit as it once was,

many still anticipate these oc-
casional reunions. "We look
forward to getting acquainted
with new members, like the
little children," Drapkin said.
Pernick said he is optimistic
that the youngest generation
of Auslanders will keep up
some of the family traditions.
His children and other
Auslanders in their 20s and
30s were instrumental in
organizing the 60th anniver-
sary festivities.
"It takes a lot of dedication
to organize an event," he said.
"The future is still bright."

Kahane Foes
Take Action

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Legal ex-
perts from both the Labor and
Likud parties are pressing for
joint action to bar Rabbi Meir
Kahane and his right-wing
Kach party from running in
the November Knesset
elections.
The experts are basing
their demand on an existing
law outlawing parties which
preach racism. They say the
Kach platform and
statements by Kahane and
other Kach personalities pro-
vide sufficient proof of the
racist and anti-democratic
nature of the party.
Geula Cohen, leader of the
nationalist Techiyah party,
has demanded that if Kach is
outlawed, similar action
should be taken against the
Communist party, whose
Jewish and Arab members
call for a two-state solution to
the Palestinian problem.
Cohen led efforts to in-
troduce a recent bill to bar
candidates holding dual
citizenship from running for
office.
Kahane, who surrendered
his U.S. citizenship this
month as a result of the bill,
claims it was aimed
specifically at getting his
name removed from the
ballot.
