NEWS STREET WISE Israelis Injured In Gaza Riots Jerusalem (JTA) — The en- tire Gaza Strip was under curfew by order of Israeli security forces after riots by Arab residents injured six Israelis, including four children. The large-scale riots, which were held to coin- cide with the Moslem New Year, culminated Sunday with a petrol bomb attack on the Israelis as they drove in a van on Gaza's main road. At least 13 Arabs were wounded by gunfire as the Israel Defense Forces sought to quell the rioting. Rioting was not reported in the West Bank and Jerusalem. In other developments, Salah Khalaf, known by his nom de guerre, Abu Iyad, and considered the number two man in the Palestine Libera- tion Organization, said in an interview with a Paris news- paper that he is ready to start discussions with Israel. Khalaf said he is ready to recognize Israel on the basis of United Nations Resolution 181, with mutual recognition between Arab and Jewish states called for by a new Palestinian provisional government that would be "wholly different from the ac- tual PLO's national coven- ant." Resolution 181, passed by the General Assembly in 1947, partitioned Palestine into two states, Jewish and Arab. At the party platform com- mittees hearings before the convention, attempts by liberal Republicans like Sen. Lowell Weicker of Connec- ticut to moderate the cam- paign document were over- whelmingly rejected. The GOP platform flatly re- jected support for a Palestin- ian state and said that establishment of a PLO state "is inimical to the security in- terests of Israel, Jordan and the United States." It also state that Jerusalem should remain an undivided city, with free and unimpeded ac- cess to all holy places by peo- ple of all faiths.
