By the time he was 30, he had concertized throughout Europe, and knew all the piano masterworks by heart, but still was not altogether pleased with his perfor- mances at the keyboard. As a result, he went into a kind of semi-retirement. Dur- ing the next three years he performed only occasionally, spending most of his time in practice and study, working to perfect his artistry at the Juilliard School in New York. In 1984, after receiving his graduate degree from Juilliard, Syme returned to a super-active performing career, beginning with a New York debut at Lincoln Center. One of his most triumphant recitals since then occurred in 1985, when he played the works of Chopin, Liszt and Haydn to a standing-room- only audience at Lincoln Center, a performance which raised $40,000 for the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. Next Friday night will mark Syme's first appearance at Meadow Brook. "I'm looking to build up my career in the orchestra realm," he says. "I've not yet performed at Meadow Brook, and this will be a great mo- ment for me. I love to play, and I can't wait to get out on the stage." In the near future, Syme looks forward to the worldwide release of the recording of his 1987 Mexico City concert, which includes Gershwin's Concerto in F, Rhapsody in Blue, and varia- tions on I Got Rhythm. The recording will be produced by CBS. Syme's other recordings in- clude Prokofiev's Concerto No. 1 in D Flat with London's Philharmonica Orchestra for Orion, and Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 in E Minor and the Beethoven Piano Concer- to No.3 in C Minor with the Royal Philharmonic for the Musical Heritage Society. A N video recording of the Mexico City concert has also been released on Volume Four of Gurtman and Murtha's "The World's Greatest Music" album series. In addition to Syme's per- formance and other selections presented by the Meadow Brook Festival Orchestra, a laser light show will be part of the evening's entertain- ment at Meadow Brook. Stag- ed by Image Engineering > Corp. (which created laser ef- fects for the opening ceremonies of the 1984 Olym- pics in Los Angeles), the laser will create animated graphics on a screen. 6-Course Gourmet Table Service Brunch Sunday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cocktails, Beer I Tues.
