T
urn out the lights! .. .
Bring on the music!
. . . Let the spots glim-
mer! . . . It's showtime, ladies
and gentlemen . . . as opening
night arrives for the members
of Knollwood Country Club.
"Puttin' On The Ritz," an
original Broadway musical
revue written and directed by
Nancy Gurwin and produced
by Jason Goode with
Associate Producers Phyllis
Newman and Cyrille Goode
had an all-Knollwood cast
paying tribute to great
American composers of the
musical theater.
Show opens as performer-
members dressed in black ex-
cept for white gloves, ties and
tennis shoes . . . A black light
illuminates the white apparel
only . . . and the audience
sees just hands, ties and feet
. . . As the strains of "Puttin'
On The Ritz" by a live or-
chestra has the audience tap-
ping their toes, out goes the
black light effect . . . and full
lighting comes on.
The audience is gleefully
shocked . . . "Look, there's so-
and-so! I don't believe it!" .. .
And a marquee above the per-
formers lights up to read,
"Puttin' On The Ritz."
Sure one of the guys mann-
ing the spotlights is Lenny
Silber . . . and certainly wife
Eileen is up there on stage
dancing away with top hat
and cane.
George Gershwin, Cole
Porter, Rogers and Hammer-
stein, Frank Loesser, Harry
Warren, Jerry Bock and
Sheldon Harnick.
Twenty-minute intermis-
sion . . . and then Jules Styne,
Stephen Sondheim, Tom
Jones and Harvey Schmidt,
Cy Coleman, Irving Berlin,
Jerry Herman and Boublil,
Schonberg and Kretzmer.
Nancy Gurwin had done
the almost impossible . . .
molding together a lot of in-
dividual talent into one fun-
filled show . . . assisted by
Donna Zatkin, Music Direc-
tor Barbara Anne Gowans,
Choreographer Valerie Mould
and Technical Advisor Nancy
Brassert.
Who were these stars up
there on stage doing such a
fast-paced presentation? .. .
Donna Barnett, Charles Litt,
Phyllis Newman, Eileen
Silber, Sharon Taylor, Mort
Weisman, Ellen Weiss, Elaine
Mattler, Ken Friedman,
Susan Friedman, Jerry
Glassman, Cyrille Goode,
Dolores Gordon, Maurice
Kurzman, Arlene Margolin,
Milt Meyers, Phyllis Meyers,
Steve Migdal, Andy Migdal,
Adria Aronovitz, Selma
Schwartz, Lester Satofsky,
Doris Chandler, Ann
Goodman.
Even the makeup was by
members . . . Rebecca Snider
and Doreen Sarrach . . .
Spotlights by members Lenny
Silber and Jack Schwartz .. .
Stage hands were members
Marty Mattler and Charles
Taylor.
Ushers and usherettes were
. . . Al Newman, Merrill Gor-
don, Jeanne Simon, Morris
Chandler, Debbie Glassman,
David Margolin, Don Katz,
Margie Kurzman, Jack
Simon, Bernice Katz and
Leonard Goodman.
A very ingenious presenta-
tion as slides of each com-
poser were shown prior to the
members doing solos, duets
and group renditions of their
famous music.
"Hey, look! He should play
golf as good as he dances!" .. .
"I can't believe she's got such
a terrific. voice. Maybe she'll
sing for my chapter."
The surprisingly fine poise
exhibited by the Knollwood
members is a tribute to their
perseverance and Nancy's
direction . . . singing and dan-
cing to the orchestral accom-
paniment . . . with colorful
setting designed by Nancy
Gurwin.
Hard to believe this was
opening night . . . a shocker to
see many of the members in
the "42nd St." number . . . tap
dancing with beautiful
precision.
"No wonder he plays tennis
so good at Franklin Racquet
Club. Look at the way he can
dance!"
What a beautiful scene as
member David Margolin, also
one of the orchestra, came on
stage playing his violin for
Fiddler On The Roof medley.
Knollwood cast members
had been in rehearsal since
June 1 . . . and putting
together the varied per-
sonalities had to be a big job
for Nancy and her gang .. .
plus exacting the wonderful
cooperation of Knollwood's
"Puttin' On The Ritz"
members.
Jason Goode passed his
stone in time to show up and
see wife Cyrille do absolute-
ly sterling performances .. .
plus daughter Susan Fried-
man and hubby Ken . . . All
except Cyrille are dentists,
but she sure pulled a lot of ap-
plause . . . Cyrille and Susan
were super in the duet of
Frank Loesser's "Marry The
Man."
Steve Migdal, the obstetri-
cian doctor who delivered
those quintuplets at Beau-
mont Hospital, coupled with
wife Andy in Rodgers and
Hammerstein's "Honey Bun"
from South Pacific and Jules
Styne's "Just In Time."
Dolores Gordon brought a
few tears to my eyes . . . as I
saw her and remembered
Dolores's mother and dad,
Shirley and Hy Garsoff, and
Aunt Anne Cohen . . . Boy,
could Shirley and Ann sing
. . . Infants Service Group af-
fairs of years back were great
because of gals like Shirley
and Dolores . . . She is still
terrific . . . and sweet as ever
. . . a wonderful talent sing-
ing "If My Friends Could See
Me Now" by Cy Coleman,
"Sabbath Prayer" and
"Sunrise — Sunset" from
Jerry Bock's and Sheldon
Harnick's Fiddler On The
Roof and Gershwin's "Let's
Call The Whole Thing Off"
with Jerry Glassman.
If the members didn't know
it before . . . they do now .. .
that Phyllis Meyers sure can
sing . . . and with such fine
stage presentation . . . Ger-
shwin's "The Man I Love" and
"Someone to Watch Over Me,"
Sondheim's "Send In The
Clowns" and "I Dreamed A
Dream" by Boublil,
Schonberg and Kretzmer.
Phyllis Newman received
applause before she even
started . . . singing Cole
Porter's "Blow Gabriel" and
Jerry Herman's "The Best of
Times."
Suzie Friedman was preg-
nant with her first child,
daughter Star, when she ap-
peared as Sarah in the Nan-
cy Gurwin production of Guys
and Dolls at the Jewish Com-
munity Center . . . Here she
was again pregnant in
another Nancy Gurwin show
. . . doing a magnificent job
with Gershwin's "Summer-
time" and Herman's
"Shalom."
The Knollwood Country
Club production of "Puttin'
On The Ritz" had auditions
. . . and is the only known
show where everybody who
auditioned was used.
A lot of hard work for five
shows . . . One of the nights
was with about 200 seniors
from the Federation Apart-
ments invited by Knollwood
to attend as its guests . . . a
very fine gesture.
During the afterglow its
opening night performance,
