Singing Isn't Work
For Ex-Detroit Cantor
DANNY RASKIN
Local Columnist
A
busman's holiday in
song . . . while in
town recently with
wife Dora from Deerfield,
Fla., Shabtai Ackerman, can-
tor emeritus of Congregation
Beth Abraham Hillel Moses,
conducted Saturday morning
services as guest cantor at the
synagogue where he spent 28
years as head spiritual
vocalist.
Before opening Beth
Abraham on W. Seven Mile
and Greenlawn, prior to its
moving onward West Bloom-
field way, Shabtai was chief
cantor at the Great
Synagogue in Tel Aviv.
He and Dora have been in
Deerfield seven years, where
he is cantor at Temple Beth
Israel with its over 2,000
families.
CONGRATS . . . to Angel
and Gary Berger . . . on their
25th anniversary.
TONIGHT is hoedown
shindig by Michigan Cancer
Fighters Circle of Fellows,
hosted by ten couples at
Palace of Auburn Hills.
MAY BE A new ladies'
store, but Elaine B's for fuller-
figured gals at Sugar Tree,
Orchard Lake Road north of
Maple, isn't forgetting the
men . . . It'll have a
"Gentlemen's Corner" loung-
ing area with coffee, cold
drinks and snacks . . .
There'll also soon be a com-
puterized piano playing daily
at the newly-opened store.
MEMBERS of the commit-
tee who helped recent Com-
munity Health Day by
Greater Detroit Chapter of
Hadassah and Sinai. Hospital
were . . . Chairlassie Bea

dance Nov. 26 at Detroit

fo on the Central class of '43

GUYS AND GALS who go
shopping know what a pain it
is when those shopping carts
are strewn all over the park-
ing areas . . . blocking spots
or lying around in such a way
for nice, neat fender bumping
. . . How's this for a sugges-
tion to supermarket owners
who can't control their help
getting out there and retriev-
ing them? Perks . . . or points
. . . for shoppers bringing
back their own carts . . .
Would be sort of like an extra
coupon or more toward next
purchases . . . A lot of ap-
preciative people will say
"Thank You."
FELLOW DROVE over to
Gurwin's Autobody Klinic on
Eight Mile Road and told
Jerry Gurwin he couldn't
shut off the radio . . . that it
was driving him buggy .. .
When Jerry asked him to step
out of the car, he noticed that
the music followed the gent
. . . "Look in your pockets,"
Jerry told the fellow, whose
car his men had just finished
fixing that day . . . The
customer did, sheepishly pull-
ed out a transistor radio.
LOOKING BACK columns
of yesteryears .. .
MARCH 8, 1974 . . . "A be-
minked young matron asked
clerk at one of the local
department stores for copy of
a birth control book called
Rhythm . . . Shown the
regular $2.95 edition, she
asked for a ritzier format .. .
When the lassie heard it
came only in the $2.95 bin-
ding, she took it reluctantly
and said, 'Well, I guess it's
good enough for every day.' "
MARCH 22, 1974 . . . "Im-
agine this! . . . Went into a gas
station last week . . . Young
fellow said, 'We're out of gas -
. . . Told him we didn't need
any . . . windshield wiper
needs fixing . . . 'Can't help
you,' says the kid, 'I'm only
hired to pump gas."
