New York (JTA) — As the
Chicago City Council
prepares to vote on a gay
rights bill, which would add
"sexual orientation" to the
list of categories protected
under municipal anti-
discrimination laws, Agudath
Israel of Illinois is acting in
the campaign against the
measure.
Chicago attorney Mendel
Singer, chairman of the Il-
linois Agudath Israel Com-
mission on Legislative and
Civic Action, and Rabbi
Chaim Gross, executive vice-
president of Agudath Israel of
Illinois, sent a letter to the 50
city council members saying
that "homosexual rights
should not be achieved at the
expense of religious rights."

New York (JTA) — Looking
for your Hebrew birthday? All
Jews can now celebrate their
Hebrew calendar birthdays by
dialing (718) 953-5000, a
Jewish birth date hotline in-
stituted by the Lubavitch
Youth Organization.
The hotline began service
last month in response to a
call by the Lubavitcher rebbe,
Rabbi Menachem Schneer-
son, that all Jews should
celebrate their Jewish birth
dates.
After punching in the
English birthdate, the caller
receives the proper Hebrew
birthday and the next time
this date will be observed on
the English calendar, as well
as the day of the week he or
she was born.

SOUTHFIELD

Washington (JTA) — The
Senate Judiciary Committee
last week approved a bill re-
quiring the U.S. Justice
Department to gather and
publish annual statistics on
crimes motivated by hate.
The so-called hate crimes bill
is expected to come before the
full Senate soon.
The bill, which covers
crimes against individuals or
property because of race,
religion, ethnic heritage or
sexual orientation, was ap-
proved by the House in May.
The Anti-Defamation
League of B'nai B'rith and
the American Jewish Con-
gress have been urging sup-
port of the legislation, as a
means of accurately gauging
the dimensions of hate
crimes.
