Ogden, who has been working
with choirs for 18 years.
"There is truly a joyful at-
titude about the group."
Her training in vocal music
helps her direct the group, say
members. "She knows what
to tell us to make a particular
sound," Tanzman says. "For
example, she once explained
that we should sigh through
the words."
Ogden says her goal is "to
guide the goup in maintain-
ing the high level of musi-
cianship that it is capable of
achieving. In addition to per-
forming music to the best of
their abilities, I would like to
give the members the oppor-
tunity to perform outside the
Jewish community. Our per-
formances at the Detroit
Public Library were a step in
that direction."
Accompanist Barr has been
with the group for 15 years. In
addition, Barr is a profes-
sional accompanist for
Southfield-Lathrup High
School and associate organist
at Temple Beth El. She also
performs duo piano work with
her mother, Sylvia Barr.
Bel Canto has a repertoire
of hundreds of pieces, about
half of which are Yiddish or
Hebrew. The extensive collec-
tion also includes classics,
folk songs and show tunes —
from Brahms to Cole Porter.
The group learns 15 to 20
new pieces a year, Ogden says.
In addition, solo, duo and trio
performances feature in-
dividual singers.
A music committee com-
prised of group members
selects the music with Ogden.
"By going to the members,
you can tap all the resources
of the choir, and music they
have worked with," Ogden
says. "This gives you a
broader base."
The ensemble meets for
rehearsal every Monday from
September through mid-
December, and from February
through June.
Funding comes through an-
nual dues of $60 per member
plus concert fees. The income
helps pay for facility rentals,
the accompanist, musical
director and other expenses.
Newly incorporated as a non-
profit group, the ensemble
plans on engaging in fund-
raising activities and apply-
ing for grants.
The choir is seeking women
who are interested in becom-
ing members. Auditions will
begin in September.
"For a woman in any walk
of life who has the lolie of
music, this is a viable outlet,"
Ogden says.
To audition, call Mrs.
Mendelson or Mrs. Tanzman,

Pain - A Warning
Signal That Calls For Action

BY DR. STANLEY LEVINE, D.C.

Doctor of Chiropractic

Pain is the number One health problem facing Americans to-
day. And at the Ilstrup Chiropractic Center we are doing something
about it.
Remember, pain is the symptom, not the cause.
Pain of any kind is an alarm that nature uses
to signal there is a health problem. It is just as
dangerous to kill the pain with a pill or injec-
tion as it would be to silence a fire alarm. To cor-
rect a problem, the cause must be treated — not
the symptom.
In many cases, pain may occur in your body
at a location different from the source of the
trouble. For example, a headache may be caus-
ed by a pinched nerve in the spinal area.
Modern life is geared to a fast pace. Work
and play make demands on your body which
often cause physical strains on your spine and
nervous system. The result of an innocent twist, turn, lift, or
awkward postural position may cause a spinal problem which, if
not corrected, can interfere with your nervous system and result
in serious illness.
However, you will normally get an advance "painful" warn-
ing that will give you a chance to take positive, corrective action.
To maintain good health it is important to have normal nerve
function. The best safeguard is to practice a program of continu-
ing Chiropractic health care. If you'll visit our office we can check
the state of your health. It may be that you require correction of
problems that have occurred as a result of your day to day activities.
Everyone is subject to spinal problems. Everyone. Beat pain
to the punch on a health diet of regular Chiropractic checkups and
care.
