the leading figures of modern
China, wrote a letter in 1920
to N.E.B. Ezra, a Shanghai
Jew and. founding editor of
the Zionist, English-language
Israel's Messenger, stating his
support of Zionism.
He wrote that Zionism "is
one of the greatest
movements of the present
time. All lovers of democracy
cannot help but support the
movement to restore your
wonderful and historic na-
tion, which has contributed so
much to the civilization of the
world and which rightfully
deserves an honorable place
in the family of nations."
"The Chinese people were
really sympathetic to the
Jewish people," said Gao. But
because of the earlier in-
fluence of the Soviet Union,
which has been hostile to
Israel, the Chinese govern-
ment concurred. "You could
find many articles in Chinese
newspapers writing about
`Zionism as a tool of im-
perialism; " he said.
Gao said his "own idea is
that the Chinese government
may be too sensitive to Arab
countries. So far, it's very dif-
ficult because we don't have
an official statement to
change our policy. But the ac-
tual relationship between
China and Israel is develop-
ing these years — academical-
ly and commercially."

Intrigue Chinese

Jerusalem — To the
Chinese, Israel is "an alien
and mysterious country, even
more so than the countries of
the Western Hemisphere,"
said a visiting Chinese
scholar during a talk at the
Harry S. Truman Research
Institute for the Advance-
ment of Peace.

What little the Chinese do
know about Israel and
Zionism is negative, said Xu
Xin, deputy chairman of the
English department at Nan-
jing University, and who has
taught a course there in
American-Jewish literature.
Zionists are said to be people
who only wanted to take
lands away from the Arabs.

Xu said he became in-
terested in the works of
American Jewish authors
such as Saul Bellow, Isaac
Bashevis Singer, Philip Roth
and Bernard Malamud when
the reading and teaching of
Western literature became
permittd again following the
Chinese cultural revolution.
