Near 12 Mile Rd. bet. Evergreen & Southfield
leave their homes. Flapan
argues that the Palestinian
exodus was "desired and
prompted" by Jewish leaders
who "believed that Zionist
colonization and statehood
necessitated the 'transfer' of
Palestinian Arabs to Arab
countries."
But Bennie Morris' "The
Birth of the Palestinian
Refugee Problem, 1947-1949"
states the Palestinian exodus
was an "almost inevitable
product of civil and guerrilla
warfare between the two
highly mingled {Jewish and
Palestinian) communities?'
And the third book, Avi
Shlaim's "Collusion Across
the Jordan: King Abdullah,
the Zionist Movement and
the Partition of Palestine",
asserts that the goal of Jor-
dan's King Abdullah was not
to destroy Israel, but to gain
control of the Arab sections of
newly partitioned Palestine,
known as the West Bank.
Toward that end, Abdullah,
claims Shlaim, entered into a
"political and strategic part-
nership" with Israeli leaders
to hammer out an agreement
on the division of Palestine.
Thus, suggest' Shlaim,
Israel, in its early years, had
a chance to establish normal
relations with a key Arab
country.
New Deli Not
Just In India
Spurred by nostalgia and a
yen for a good, thick pastrami
sandwich, the delicatessen is
having a renaissance around
the country, according to USA
Today.
In the forefront of the deli
trend, according to the paper,
are:
• New York's Carnegie
Deli, which opened a branch
at Tyson's Corner near
Washington last year and
plans one in Beverly Hills.
Stage
• Manhattan's
Delicatessen, which expands
to Boston this month and
may open branches in Wash-
ington and Philadelphia.
• Maven's Kosher Court, a
hit since opening in May in
Cambridge, Mass.
Responsible for the deli
resurgence, according to New
York consultant Arnold
Brown, are those people who
grew up in the 1960s and now
"realize they won't be young,
thin and beautiful forever. So
they indulge. The feeling is,
"Why not?"
Another reason was ad-
vanced by Harvard law pro-
fessor Alan Dershowitz, a
partner in Maven's Kosher
Court. Said Dershowitz,
"Biting into a pastrami-on-
rye sandwich is history, emo-
tion and nostalgia
