report on their progress.
"One of the most important
things is that I give the
clients someone to talk to.
They know they can confide
in me. It makes me feel good
to know they trust me,"
Breuer said.
Dana Mandel, 20, also finds
rewarding the opportunity to
help others. An ad-
ministrative assistant at
Fresh Air Society for the sum-
mer, she works with Elliot
Sorkin, the director of
development, on special pro-
jects, including plans for a
barrier-free village at Camp
Maas for handicapped
individuals.
"This internship ties in all
of my interests — the business
field and social service. It's
practical experience that is
broadening my awareness of
the Jewish agencies in the
community," Mandel said.
A junior at Michigan State

University, Mandel would
like to work on the business
side of a social service -
organization in a foreign
country.
Part of the weekly schedule
of Project JOIN includes an
all-day seminar on Fridays,
where the interns discuss
their experiences as well as
the current and future pro-
blems of the Jewish
community.
"The seminars are eye-
opening," Breuer said. "I'm
learning how all the different
Jewish agencies work and
how they are linked together."
This connection is one that
extends from Detroit to as far
away as Boston.
"I can apply this knowledge
to Boston (where he attends
school) or anywhere else I go,"
Dobb said. "I have a good
sense of how the Jewish com-
munity works and how I can
work within it." ■

Jewish Murder
Plot Exposed In
Los Angeles

Los Angeles (JTA) — The ar-
rest of William Ross, a
51-year old real estate broker,
has provided the missing
motive in the mail-bomb
murder allegedly carried out
by a Kiryat Arba couple.
Federal authorities last week
accused Ross, a wealthy sup-
porter of the Jewish Defense
League, in a murder-for-profit
scheme over a bitter real
estate dispute.
To carry out the scheme,
Ross allegedly enlisted the
help of two fellow JDL
members, Robert Steven
Manning and his wife,
Rochelle.
The Mannings, who hold
dual U.S. and Israeli citizen-
ship, immigrated to Israel in
1973. Both are residents of
Kiryat Arba, one of the most
militant Jewish settlements
on the West Bank.
Rochelle Manning, 48, was
arrested in June at the Los
Angeles airport as she
arrived by plane from Israel
with her two children. Robert
Manning, 36, remains a
fugitive in Israel and U.S.
authorities say that they are
seeking his extradition.

Jews Protest
UN Tribute

Geneva (JTA) — Jewish
groups sent a letter to the
chairman of a United Nations
conference here protesting a
decision to have a moment of
silence in memory of the

Palestinian children killed
during the unrest in the
Israeli-administered ter-
ritories.
The letter was sent to
Murdlhar Chandrakani
Bhandari, chairman of the
United Nations Subcommis-
sion on Prevention of
Discrimination and Protec-
tion of Minorities. The UN
body decided at the opening of
its 40th session last Monday
to honor the memory of
children who have died in the
Palestinian uprising.
The moment of reflection,
proposed by representatives
from Morocco and Algeria,
was added to a similar
gesture to honor children
killed in South Africa.
The letter was initiated by
the Coordinating Board of
Jewish Organizations here
and was signed by represen-
tatives of the International
Council of Jewish Women,
Women's International
Zionist Federation, World
Jewish Congress and the
World Union of Progressive
Judaism.
