GIRLS' SOFTBALL

Al Kaczander, freshman
softball coach at Southfield-
Lathrup High School, has six
players returning from the
1986 bronze medal team
which was coached by Karen
Sklar. All 11 team members
are high school players. "It's
an experienced group," says
Kaczander.
1986 returnees are Sandra
Alspecter, Julie Collis, Lorie
Erlich, Laurie Geross,, Nikki
Kaczander and Nicole Ru-
dolph. New team members
are Randi Aronoff, Stacey
Berman, Lisa Slovis, Stefanie
Polsky and Jackie Wander.
Six players — Berman, Er-
lich, Kaczander, Polsky,
_Rudolph and Wander — play
at Lathrup and on a team this
summer. The Maccabi team is
now practicing two or three
times a week.
"I've been to the Toronto
Maccabi games," says Coach
Kaczander. "I saw the com-
petition there and based on
what I know, what my team
is gonna be like, I would say
that there's a decent chance
we can bring home a medal:'
Kaczander says his team
will be a singles-hitting
squad with good pitching and
defense. He will emphasize
bold base running.
"At our last practice, I told
`ern we're gonna be aggressive
on the bases. When they're on
the bases, don't even think
about a single. They're off and
running on their own. That's
how I coach in high school.
And I said, 'They throw you
out, that's the way it's gonna
be. Don't be worried, I said.
`I'll accept all responsibility
for that: "

VOLLEYBALL

Karen Sklar, a varsity soft-
ball player at Michigan State
and Wayne State universities
and a three-letter winner at
Farmington Harrison High
School in basketball, volley-
ball and softball, moves from
Maccabi softball to volleyball
coach this year. But she will

have a hard time matching
the 1986 softball bronze. Her
volleyball team lists five
players — four girls and one
boy — and will play in the
boys' division. They may be
supplemented by players from
other sports.
Detroit sent separate boys'
and girls' teams in 1986. "I
don't know why there was
such a lack of interest," says
Sklar.
Adding to Sklar's woes is an
injury to Scott Chupak, which
will keep him out of action.
The five-member squad in-
cludes Shelley Berenstein,
Josh Datch, Karen Datch,
Jennifer Kahn and Tracy
Katkowski.
Sklar remains optimistic
about the team. "I've seen
`em play; they're really good,"
she says. Unfortunately, she
has seen them individually,
not as a group. Sklar practices
regularly with Kahn, but the
other four play on different
summer teams.
"The next time I see 'em
play together will probably be
in Chicago," says Sklar. "It's
really hard. I want it to be a
good team, but it's hard when
nobody's there . . . They all
have good talent. It's a mat-
ter of putting it all together."

GYMNASTICS

The team does not have a
coach — team chaparones will
guide the squad — but it does
include 1986 bronze medalist
Meryl Bender, who scored on
the parallel bars. Heather
Kahn and Michelle Wolfe
round out the team.

TENNIS

Jennifer Goldfarb, 1986
gold medalist, leads a
talented tennis lineup.
Goldfarb, Danny Friedman
and Seth Hoffman play in na-
tional competitions in their
age groups. The team's other
members are Corbin Bell,
Rona Fenton, Danielle Gar-
ber, Gabe Gelman, Yasha
Gelman, David Goldfarb,
Seth Roseman, Amy Schavrin
and Jeff Sturman. Marianne
