Beth Israel
Has New Rabbi

STAFF REPORT

R

obert Dobrusin is the
new rabbi of Beth
Israel Congregation.
Dobrusin, 33, took up the post
at Ann Arbor's Conservative
synagogue Aug. 1.
A native of Boston, Rabbi
Dobrusin last served a con-
gregation in Lansdale, Pa.,
near Philadelphia. He said
his major interests are work-
ing with youth and interfaith
activities.
Beth Israel mirrors some of
the tensions that exist bet-
ween the Conservative move-
ment's progressive and tradi-
tional wings, he said. He
views those tensions as
constructive.
"The congregation is pro-
gressive in that we are
egalitarian and encourage
people outside the
mainstream to come back in.
At the same time we stand
firm on certain traditional
standards," he said.
Rabbi Dobrusin is a
graduate of Brandeis Univer-
sity and the Jewish
Theological Seminary.
